Tips for success

For a deeper flavor, you can sear the pork shoulder in a hot skillet before placing it into the slow cooker. This caramelizes the exterior and adds a layer of complexity to the final dish. However, if you are short on time, the dump-and-go method described here works perfectly well due to the long cooking duration which naturally tenderizes the meat effectively.

If you find the sauce is too thin after shredding the pork, you can remove the lid and set the slow cooker to high for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.

This will allow some of the liquid to evaporate and the glaze to thicken further. Watch it closely during this time to ensure it does not burn, as the sugar in the preserves can caramelize quickly once the liquid volume decreases.

Variations

  • Spicy BBQ Twist: Add two tablespoons of your favorite smoky barbecue sauce to the slow cooker along with the other ingredients for a deeper, smokier flavor profile that complements the sweetness of the blackberries.
  • Citrus Infusion: Add the zest of one orange to the slow cooker before cooking. The citrus oils will brighten the heavy flavors of the pork and blackberry, adding a refreshing note to the final dish.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer
Freeze in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months.
Reheat
Reheat in a saucepan over medium heat until hot throughout.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To maintain the best texture, keep the shredded pork in its juices.

If you are preparing this for later, the flavors often meld and improve after sitting for a day, making it an excellent candidate for meal prepping. Ensure the pork is cooled to room temperature within 2 hours before placing it into the refrigerator to maintain food safety.

This dish is perfect for making ahead as it holds up very well in the refrigerator. You can cook the pork, shred it, and store it in its own juices.

When ready to serve, simply reheat the desired portion in a saucepan or microwave until steaming hot. The flavors will remain vibrant, and the meat will stay tender, making your dinner preparation on the day of serving completely stress-free.

Serving ideas

To serve, arrange the toasted Hawaiian rolls on a platter. Use tongs to pile a generous amount of the blackberry-glazed pork onto each roll. Top immediately with a sprinkle of goat cheese crumbles and fresh cilantro.

The combination of the sweet roll, savory pork, tangy cheese, and fresh herbs creates a balanced flavor profile that is ideal for appetizers or a hearty main course.

If serving for a larger group, consider setting up a DIY slider station. Place the shredded pork in the slow cooker on a warm setting, provide a basket of toasted rolls, and set out bowls of goat cheese and cilantro. This allows guests to assemble their own sandwiches according to their preferences. Provide extra napkins, as this dish is intentionally juicy and flavorful.

Frequently asked questions

Can this recipe be made with a different cut of meat?
While pork shoulder is recommended for its high fat content and connective tissue that breaks down during slow cooking, you could use pork butt. Avoid leaner cuts like pork loin, as they will dry out during the long 8-hour cooking process.
Is it necessary to remove the seeds from the jalapenos?
Removing the seeds reduces the intensity of the heat. If you enjoy a spicier dish, you can leave some or all of the seeds in. If you prefer a milder flavor, ensure you scrape the seeds out completely before slicing.
Can this be frozen for later use?
Yes, this dish freezes very well. Once the pork is cooked and cooled, place it in a freezer-safe bag, removing as much air as possible. It can be stored in the freezer for up to two months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

Slow-Cooker Blackberry Jalapeno Pulled Pork

Close-up of succulent pulled pork with a glossy blackberry glaze on a toasted roll.

Ingredients

  • 4 lb pork shoulder
  • 1 cup seedless blackberry preserves
  • 2 fresh jalapenos, sliced
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 Hawaiian rolls, toasted
  • 1/2 cup goat cheese crumbles
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

Instructions

  1. Place the pork shoulder into the ceramic slow cooker. Add the seedless blackberry preserves, sliced jalapenos, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and minced garlic cloves on top of the meat. Ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed to allow the flavors to meld during the cooking process.
  2. Cover the slow cooker with the lid and set it to cook on the low setting for 8 hours. The long, slow heat will break down the collagen in the pork shoulder, making it incredibly tender and allowing it to absorb the sweet and spicy glaze effectively.
  3. Once the cooking time is complete, carefully remove the lid and shred the meat directly in the slow cooker using two forks. Toss the shredded pork thoroughly with the blackberry reduction until it is evenly coated. Ensure the internal temperature of the pork reaches 145°F (63°C) and let it rest for at least 3 minutes before serving on toasted Hawaiian rolls with goat cheese and cilantro.
