Tips for success
For the most tender chicken, avoid overcooking. The 3-hour high heat is just right—any longer and the chicken may start to shred. If you're using a slow cooker that runs hot, start checking at the 2.5-hour mark.
The cornstarch slurry is your best friend for achieving that thick, takeout-style sauce. Make sure to stir it in well and give it time to thicken before serving.
This recipe is incredibly versatile. You can add other vegetables like sliced carrots or snap peas during the last hour of cooking for extra color and crunch.
For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of sriracha to the sauce. If you have leftover sauce, it's delicious drizzled over fried rice or used as a dipping sauce for egg rolls.
Variations
- Spicy Sweet and Sour: Add 1-2 teaspoons of sriracha or chili garlic sauce to the sauce mixture for a spicy kick. You can also sprinkle in red pepper flakes along with the other ingredients. This adds a nice heat that balances the sweetness.
- Veggie-Packed: Add sliced carrots, snap peas, or broccoli florets during the last hour of cooking. This adds extra color, texture, and nutrition to the dish. Just make sure to cut the vegetables into bite-sized pieces so they cook evenly.
- Hawaiian Twist: Use fresh pineapple chunks instead of canned, and add a splash of pineapple juice to the sauce. You can also add diced ham or crispy bacon for a smoky, salty contrast to the sweet and tangy flavors.
- Gluten-Free: Use tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce to make the dish gluten-free. Double-check that your ketchup is gluten-free, as some brands contain wheat. Serve over rice or quinoa for a complete gluten-free meal.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently with a splash of water to revive the sauce.
- Freezer
- Freeze cooked sweet and sour chicken in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in a skillet or microwave.
- Reheat
- Reheat in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring halfway, or in a skillet over medium heat with a little water until hot and bubbly.
Leftover sweet and sour chicken can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will continue to meld, making it even more delicious the next day.
When reheating, add a splash of water or chicken broth to loosen the sauce, and heat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop until warmed through. Avoid overheating, as the chicken can become tough.
You can prep the ingredients up to a day in advance. Cut the chicken, dice the peppers, and mix the sauce, then store them separately in the refrigerator. When you're ready to cook, simply layer everything in the slow cooker and proceed with the recipe.
This is a great time-saver for busy weeknights. You can also freeze the cooked dish for up to 3 months—just thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat gently.
Serving ideas
Serve the sweet and sour chicken over steamed white rice for a classic takeout experience. The fluffy rice soaks up the glossy sauce, making every bite satisfying. For a lower-carb option, serve it over cauliflower rice or alongside steamed broccoli. Garnish with sesame seeds and, if you like, a sprinkle of sliced green onions for a pop of color.
This dish also pairs well with simple sides like egg rolls, wonton soup, or a crisp green salad with a light sesame dressing. For a family-style meal, set out bowls of rice and the chicken, and let everyone serve themselves. The leftovers are great for lunch the next day—just reheat and enjoy.

Crockpot Sweet and Sour Pineapple Chicken: Easy Takeout Fakeout

Ingredients
- 2 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 can (20 oz) pineapple chunks in juice, drained
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 3 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- 3 tbsp water
- Steamed white rice, for serving
- Sesame seeds, for garnish, to taste
Instructions
- Place the cubed chicken breasts in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Scatter the diced red and green bell peppers and the drained pineapple chunks over the chicken. In a medium bowl, whisk together the apple cider vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, and soy sauce until the sugar is dissolved. Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken and vegetables.
- Place the lid on the slow cooker and set it to HIGH. Cook for 3 hours, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender. The chicken is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the largest piece. Avoid lifting the lid during cooking to maintain heat.
- In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch and water together to make a slurry. Pour the slurry into the slow cooker and stir gently to combine. The sauce will begin to thicken immediately. Continue to cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is glossy and coats the back of a spoon.
- Spoon the sweet and sour chicken and peppers over steamed white rice. Garnish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Serve hot and enjoy the takeout-worthy flavor.
