Tips for success
For the best molten center, use high-quality chocolate that melts smoothly. Bittersweet disks with at least 60% cacao give a deep, intense flavor.
Milk chocolate chunks add creaminess, and white chocolate chips provide a sweet contrast. If you prefer a less sweet cake, reduce the white chocolate chips to 1/2 cup.
Serve the cake directly from the slow cooker to keep it warm. If you need to hold it, set the slow cooker to WARM for up to 1 hour.
The cake is best within the first hour, as the center will continue to set. For a cleaner scoop, use a large ice cream scoop and cut through the top crust with a spoon first.
Variations
- Peanut Butter Swirl: After layering the chocolate, drop spoonfuls of creamy peanut butter over the top and swirl gently with a knife. Peanut butter adds a salty, nutty contrast. Use 1/2 cup peanut butter. Cook as directed.
- Mint Chocolate: Add 1 teaspoon peppermint extract to the cake batter. Replace the white chocolate chips with mint chocolate chips. The cool mint flavor pairs beautifully with the dark chocolate. Cook as directed.
- Salted Caramel: Drizzle 1/2 cup caramel sauce over the batter before adding the chocolate layers. Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top of the pudding mix. The salt enhances the chocolate and caramel flavors. Cook as directed.
- Espresso Kick: Dissolve 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder in the water before adding to the batter. The espresso deepens the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee. Cook as directed.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Refrigerate leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 4 days. The texture becomes denser when chilled, but reheating restores the molten center.
- Freezer
- Freeze cooled cake in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the microwave or oven.
- Reheat
- Reheat individual servings in the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds, or warm the whole cake in a 350°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes.
Store leftover cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The cake will firm up when chilled.
To reheat, microwave individual servings for 20 to 30 seconds or warm in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes. The center will become molten again.
You can prepare the batter and layer the chocolate in the slow cooker up to 8 hours ahead. Cover and refrigerate. When ready to cook, add 15 to 20 minutes to the cooking time. The pudding mix can also be sprinkled on just before cooking.
Serving ideas
Serve the cake warm, scooped into bowls. A scoop of raspberry sorbet is the perfect counterpoint to the rich chocolate—its tartness cuts through the sweetness and adds a bright, fruity note. Chocolate curls add a delicate crunch and a professional finish.
This cake is ideal for parties and potlucks because it serves a crowd and stays warm in the slow cooker.
For individual servings, use a large spoon to scoop from the center to the edge, ensuring each portion has both crust and lava. Top with fresh raspberries if you like, though the sorbet is already a perfect pairing.

Triple Chocolate Crockpot Volcano Cake

Ingredients
- 1 box dark chocolate fudge cake mix
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup bittersweet chocolate disks
- 1 cup milk chocolate chunks
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- 1 box instant hot chocolate pudding mix (3.9 oz)
- raspberry sorbet, for serving
- chocolate curls, for serving
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dark chocolate fudge cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water until smooth and no dry streaks remain. The batter will be thick and glossy. Lightly grease the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick spray or a little oil.
- Pour the fudge batter into the prepared slow cooker and spread it into an even layer. Sprinkle the bittersweet chocolate disks evenly over the batter, followed by the milk chocolate chunks and white chocolate chips. Gently press the chocolate pieces into the batter with a spatula so they are partially submerged.
- Sprinkle the instant hot chocolate pudding mix evenly over the entire surface of the batter and chocolate. Do not stir. The pudding mix will form a crackly top as the cake bakes.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on HIGH for 2.5 hours. Do not open the lid during the first 2 hours. The edges will set, the center will remain slightly soft, and a crackly brownie-like dome will form on top.
- The cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs but no raw batter. The internal temperature of the cake should reach 160°F (71°C) to ensure the eggs are fully cooked. If the center is still very wet, cook for 10 to 15 minutes more.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the cake rest, uncovered, for 10 minutes. This allows the chocolate lava to settle slightly and makes serving easier. The cake will continue to set as it cools.
- Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, scoop deep into the center of the cake to reach the molten chocolate core. Place each serving in a bowl, top with a scoop of raspberry sorbet, and sprinkle with chocolate curls. Serve warm.
