Tips for success
For the best texture, slice the yams into even 1/2-inch rounds. Thicker slices will take longer to cook, while thinner ones may become mushy.
Use a sharp knife and a steady hand for uniform pieces. If you prefer a more rustic look, you can cut them into chunks, but adjust the cooking time accordingly.
The syrup is the star—don't waste a drop. After serving the yams, spoon extra glaze over each portion. If the syrup has thickened too much, whisk in a tablespoon of warm water or apple juice to loosen it.
For a festive touch, sprinkle with chopped pecans or a pinch of flaky sea salt just before serving, though the classic version is delicious as is.
Variations
- Orange-Spiced: Add the zest and juice of one orange to the slow cooker before cooking. The citrus brightens the syrup and complements the warm spices. Reduce the vanilla to 1 teaspoon.
- Bourbon-Glazed: Stir in 2 tablespoons of bourbon during the last 30 minutes of cooking. The alcohol cooks off, leaving a subtle smoky sweetness. Omit for a family-friendly version.
- Maple-Brown Sugar: Replace half of the dark brown sugar with maple syrup. Reduce the vanilla to 1 teaspoon and add 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger for extra warmth.
- Pecan-Topped: Toast 1/2 cup of pecan halves and sprinkle over the yams just before serving. The nuts add crunch and a buttery flavor that pairs well with the caramel syrup.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. The syrup will thicken; add a splash of water when reheating.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat gently.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, or microwave in 30-second bursts until warm.
Store leftover candied yams in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
The syrup will thicken as it cools; reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or orange juice to restore a pourable consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
This dish can be made up to 2 days ahead. Cook as directed, then let cool completely before refrigerating.
To reheat, place in a covered baking dish and warm in a 350°F oven for 20-30 minutes, or until heated through. The flavors meld even more after a day, making it an excellent make-ahead side for holidays.
Serving ideas
Serve candied yams as a classic side dish alongside roasted turkey, baked ham, or fried chicken. They also pair beautifully with pork chops or grilled sausages, where the sweet glaze contrasts with savory meat. For a Southern-style spread, add collard greens, cornbread, and mac and cheese.
For a dessert-like presentation, spoon the yams over vanilla ice cream or pound cake, turning them into a warm, spiced sundae. The syrup doubles as a sauce for pancakes or waffles. Leftover yams can be mashed and swirled into oatmeal or yogurt for a sweet breakfast treat.

Slow Cooker Candied Yams: Easy Southern Classic

Ingredients
- 4 lb garnet yams, peeled and sliced 1/2-inch thick
- 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 1 stick unsalted butter, cubed
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste
Instructions
- Peel the garnet yams and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Place half of the sliced yams in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Sprinkle with half of the dark brown sugar, dot with half of the cubed butter, and add one cinnamon stick. Repeat with the remaining yams, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon stick. Sprinkle the ground nutmeg over the top and drizzle with the vanilla bean paste.
- Cover the slow cooker with its glass lid. Set the temperature to LOW. Do not add any liquid—the yams will release their own moisture as they cook, creating a rich syrup.
- Cook the yams on LOW for 4 1/2 hours, undisturbed. The yams will become tender and translucent at the edges, and the sugar, butter, and spices will meld into a thick, bubbling caramel syrup. The aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg will fill the kitchen.
- After 4 1/2 hours, gently test a yam slice with a fork. It should be tender but still hold its shape. The syrup should coat the back of a spoon. If the yams are not quite tender, continue cooking in 15-minute increments until they are.
- Using a slotted spoon, carefully transfer the candied yams to a warm serving dish. Spoon the remaining brown sugar glaze generously over the top. Serve immediately, while the syrup is still bubbling and warm.
