Tips for success
For the creamiest sauce, use full-fat cream cheese and whole-milk mozzarella. Lower-fat versions may not melt as smoothly. If you prefer a thinner sauce, add a splash of pasta water or extra marinara after cooking.
For a golden, cheesy crust, you can transfer the finished dish to a baking dish and broil for a few minutes, but this is optional.
To store leftovers, let the dish cool for no more than 2 hours, then refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or milk to restore creaminess. This recipe also freezes well; see the freezing instructions below.
Variations
- Spicy Sausage Version: Swap half the beef meatballs for spicy Italian sausage links (casings removed). Brown the sausage in a skillet before adding to the slow cooker for extra flavor.
- Vegetarian Option: Replace the meatballs with plant-based meatballs or extra mushrooms. Use a vegan cream cheese and mozzarella substitute to make it dairy-free.
- Add Vegetables: Stir in 2 cups of baby spinach or chopped bell peppers during the last 30 minutes of cooking for extra color and nutrients.
- Cheesy Garlic Bread Topping: Serve the ziti topped with toasted garlic bread cubes for a crunchy contrast. Not shown in the video, but a tasty addition.

Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot. Add a splash of water or extra marinara if the sauce has thickened too much.
Assemble the slow cooker insert with all ingredients up to a day in advance. Cover and refrigerate. When ready to cook, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 5 hours or HIGH for 3 hours. If starting from cold, add 30 minutes to the cooking time.
Serving ideas
Serve the mozzarella meatball baked ziti hot, straight from the slow cooker or spooned onto dinner plates.
A crisp green salad and garlic bread are classic sides, but the dish is hearty enough to stand alone. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired, though the video does not show this.
For a family-style presentation, place the slow cooker on the table and let everyone serve themselves. The cheese pulls are part of the fun. Leftovers are excellent for lunch the next day, served cold or reheated.

Slow-Cooker Mozzarella Meatball Baked Ziti

Ingredients
- 2 lb homestyle Italian beef meatballs
- 1 lb ziti pasta
- 4 cups sweet basil marinara sauce
- 2 tsp Italian herb seasoning
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 cups shredded whole-milk mozzarella
Instructions
- Place the beef meatballs in an even layer in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the ziti pasta directly over the meatballs. Pour the marinara sauce over the pasta and meatballs, then sprinkle with the Italian herb seasoning. Stir gently to combine everything evenly.
- Place the block of cream cheese in the center of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the top, covering the sauce and pasta completely.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the meatballs are cooked through and the pasta is tender. Do not stir during cooking; the cheese will melt and create a creamy sauce.
- After the cooking time, check that the meatballs are fully cooked by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the center of a meatball. The temperature should read at least 160°F (71°C). If not, continue cooking for another 30 minutes.
- Once the meatballs are done, gently stir the mixture to combine the melted cream cheese and mozzarella into the sauce. The sauce will be creamy and slightly thickened. Serve hot, spooning the cheesy pasta and meatballs onto plates.
