Tips for success
For the most flavorful sauce, use a good-quality white wine that you would enjoy drinking. The alcohol cooks off, but the flavor remains. If you prefer not to use wine, substitute an equal amount of low-sodium chicken broth and add an extra squeeze of lemon juice. The capers are essential for their briny pop; don't skip them.
To make your own Cajun butter, melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter and stir in 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, and 1 clove minced garlic. Let it sit for 5 minutes to infuse. This mixture can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For a spicier dish, add a pinch of cayenne.
Variations
- Extra Spicy: Add 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper or a chopped fresh jalapeño to the butter before pouring. The heat will infuse the sauce without overwhelming the seafood.
- Herb Garden: Add a handful of fresh thyme or tarragon sprigs to the slow cooker during cooking. Remove before serving for a subtle herbal note.
- Citrus Burst: Replace the Meyer lemon with a mix of orange and lemon slices. The orange adds a sweet, fragrant twist that pairs well with the Cajun spices.
- Seafood Medley: Add 1/2 pound of sea scallops or mussels along with the shrimp. Arrange them in the slow cooker and adjust the cooking time to ensure all seafood is done.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The sauce will solidify; reheat gently on the stovetop.
- Freezer
- Freeze the cooked seafood and sauce in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of water or wine to loosen the sauce. Avoid boiling, which can toughen the seafood.
Store leftover seafood and sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The sauce will solidify as it cools, but that's normal.
To reheat, gently warm the seafood and sauce in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of water or wine to loosen the sauce. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the seafood tough.
You can prepare the ingredients up to a day in advance: split the lobster tails, peel and devein the shrimp, slice the lemon, and measure the wine, capers, and butter.
Keep them covered in the refrigerator. When ready to cook, layer everything in the slow cooker and proceed. The dish is best served fresh, but leftovers are still delicious.
Serving ideas
Serve the lobster and shrimp over steamed jasmine rice to soak up the buttery sauce. A side of crusty bread is also excellent for dipping.
For a lighter meal, serve the seafood with a simple green salad or sautéed greens. The lemon wedges are a must — a squeeze of fresh lemon brightens the rich sauce and enhances the seafood's natural sweetness.
This dish is impressive enough for a special occasion but easy enough for a weeknight. Pair it with a crisp white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or a Chardonnay.
For a festive touch, garnish with fresh parsley or chives, though the recipe is delicious as is. The leftovers can be turned into a seafood pasta or a hearty soup the next day.

Crockpot Bayou Butter Lobster Tails and Shrimp

Ingredients
- 4 split cold-water lobster tails
- 1 lb raw jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 fresh yellow Meyer lemon, sliced
- 2 tbsp brined capers, drained
- 1/2 cup crisp white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc
- 1/2 cup melted Cajun garlic-paprika butter
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- Steamed jasmine rice, for serving
- Lemon wedges, for serving
Instructions
- Place the split lobster tails and raw jumbo shrimp in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Arrange the lemon slices over the seafood, then scatter the capers on top. Pour the white wine over everything.
- Pour the melted Cajun garlic-paprika butter and the fresh lemon juice over the seafood and aromatics. Do not stir; the layers will meld during cooking.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 2 hours, or until the lobster tails are opaque and the shrimp are pink and firm. The sauce will be bubbling gently around the edges.
- Using tongs, check the thickest part of a lobster tail and the largest shrimp. The flesh should be opaque and reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) on an instant-read thermometer.
- Using a slotted spoon, gently lift the lobster tails and shrimp from the sauce and transfer to a serving platter. Reserve the sauce in the slow cooker.
- Plate the steamed jasmine rice on a large platter or individual plates. Arrange the lobster tails and shrimp over the rice, then spoon the warm Cajun butter sauce from the slow cooker over the top. Serve with lemon wedges on the side.
