Tips for success
For the most flavorful result, use full-fat cowboy butter and let it melt slowly over the roast. If you don't have cowboy butter, you can make a quick version by mixing softened butter with minced garlic, chopped parsley, and a pinch of salt.
The butter not only adds flavor but also helps create a silky gravy as it blends with the seasoning packets and pork juices.
To thicken the gravy, remove the roast and whisk 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water, then stir into the slow cooker juices and cook on high for 10-15 minutes until thickened.
Alternatively, serve the pork with a slotted spoon and use the juices as a light sauce. Leftover gravy can be refrigerated and used to moisten leftovers.
Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes or a diced jalapeño to the seasoning mix for a spicy twist. The heat balances the richness of the butter and gravy. Serve with extra hot sauce on the side.
- Beef Version: Swap the pork for a beef chuck roast. Cook on low for 8-10 hours until fork-tender. The seasoning packets work equally well with beef, creating a savory pot-roast-style dish. Serve over mashed potatoes.
- Creamy Gravy: After shredding the pork, stir in 1/2 cup of heavy cream or sour cream to the gravy for a creamy, tangy sauce. This works especially well if you prefer a richer, more indulgent dish. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Vegetable Add-In: Add 2 cups of baby carrots and 2 chopped onions to the bottom of the slow cooker before placing the pork on top. The vegetables will cook in the juices and become tender, absorbing the flavors. Serve the vegetables alongside the pork.

Serving ideas
Serve the shredded pork over a generous bed of warm buttered egg noodles, spooning the rich gravy over the top. The noodles soak up the savory juices, making each bite comforting and satisfying.
For a lighter option, serve over cauliflower rice or alongside steamed green beans. A sprinkle of fresh parsley or chives adds a pop of color and freshness.
This dish also works well in sandwiches or tacos. Pile the pork onto soft rolls with a little gravy for a juicy pulled-pork sandwich, or serve in warm tortillas with pickled onions and a drizzle of the gravy. The leftovers are versatile and can be repurposed for lunches throughout the week.
