Tips for success
For the best flavor, sear the pork shoulder in a hot skillet with a little oil before adding it to the slow cooker. This adds a deep, caramelized crust that enhances the overall taste.
However, the recipe works perfectly without searing, making it truly dump-and-go. If you have time, searing is worth the extra 10 minutes.
The cooking liquid is gold—use it as a gravy. If it seems thin, whisk in a slurry of 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 2 tablespoons water, then simmer on HIGH for 15 minutes until thickened.
For a brighter finish, stir in a squeeze of lemon juice or a splash of apple cider vinegar just before serving to balance the richness.
Variations
- Spicy Chipotle: Add 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, minced, along with the seasoning packets. The smoky heat pairs beautifully with the butter and herbs. Adjust the amount to taste—start with one pepper for a milder kick.
- BBQ Pulled Pork: After shredding, toss the pork with 1 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Serve on buns with crunchy coleslaw. This variation turns the dish into a classic summer cookout favorite.
- Low-Carb Bowl: Skip the noodles and serve the pork over cauliflower rice or a bed of sautéed greens. Add a dollop of sour cream or a sprinkle of shredded cheese for extra richness. The gravy is still delicious without the starch.
- Herb-Infused: Add a few sprigs of fresh rosemary, thyme, and sage to the slow cooker before cooking. The fresh herbs will infuse the meat and gravy with a more pronounced herbal flavor. Remove the sprigs before shredding.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Keep the meat submerged in its juices to maintain moisture.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, adding a splash of broth or water to loosen the sauce.
Leftover pulled pork can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Keep the meat in its juices to prevent drying. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of broth or water if needed.
This dish is ideal for meal prep. Cook the pork up to 3 days ahead and store it in the refrigerator. The flavors meld and deepen overnight. Reheat in a covered pot over low heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through. You can also freeze the cooked pork in freezer-safe bags for up to 3 months.
Serving ideas
Serve the pulled pork over a bed of warm buttered egg noodles, as shown in the video. The noodles soak up the rich gravy, creating a comforting, satisfying meal.
For a low-carb option, use cauliflower rice or roasted spaghetti squash. The pork also shines on toasted buns with coleslaw for a classic pulled pork sandwich.
Garnish with fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color, though the dish is flavorful enough on its own. Pair with a simple green salad or steamed green beans to balance the richness.
The leftovers are excellent in tacos, quesadillas, or on top of baked potatoes. The possibilities are endless, and the flavor only gets better the next day.

Three-Packet Garlic Butter Pork Shoulder: Slow-Cooker Set-and-Forget

Ingredients
- 4 lb boneless pork shoulder roast (Boston butt)
- 1 oz dry ranch seasoning mix (1 packet)
- 0.7 oz zesty Italian dressing mix (1 packet)
- 0.87 oz brown gravy mix (1 packet)
- 4 tbsp garlic-herb compound cowboy butter, cold, cut into medallions
Instructions
- Place the pork shoulder roast in the center of a 6-quart slow cooker insert. It does not need to be trimmed or tied; leave it whole. The roast will shrink and shred easily after slow cooking.
- Evenly sprinkle the dry ranch seasoning mix, zesty Italian dressing mix, and brown gravy mix over the entire surface of the roast. Use your hands or a spoon to pat the seasonings gently so they adhere.
- Place the four medallions of garlic-herb compound cowboy butter evenly on top of the seasoned roast. They can be spaced apart or placed in a row; they will melt and baste the meat as it cooks.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 5 to 6 hours, until the pork is fork-tender and shreds easily. The internal temperature should reach at least 145°F (63°C) for safety, but for shredding, it will be well above that. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Once the roast is fork-tender, transfer it to a cutting board. Let it rest for at least 3 minutes. Using two forks, shred the meat into bite-sized pieces, discarding any large fat chunks if desired.
- Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker with the accumulated juices and melted butter. Stir gently to coat the meat with the gravy. Keep warm until ready to serve.
- Spoon the saucy pulled pork over warm buttered egg noodles, or serve on buns, over rice, or alongside roasted vegetables. The meat is rich and flavorful on its own, but the extra gravy is perfect for soaking into the noodles.
