Tips for success
For the best flavor, sear the brisket in a hot skillet with a little oil before adding it to the slow cooker. This adds a deep, caramelized crust that enhances the overall taste.
However, the video shows it going in raw, so this is optional. If you do sear, do it in a well-ventilated kitchen and let the brisket cool slightly before placing it in the slow cooker.
To make the gravy extra rich, after shredding the beef, use an immersion blender to puree some of the vegetables and herbs from the cooking liquid. This will thicken the gravy naturally.
Alternatively, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the hot gravy, then simmer for a few minutes until thickened. Always taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes or a diced jalapeño along with the seasoning packets for a spicy twist. The heat mellows during slow cooking, leaving a warm, subtle kick.
- Smoky Version: Replace the brown gravy mix with a smoked paprika and beef bouillon blend, and use smoked garlic butter. This adds a deep, barbecue-like smokiness to the dish.
- Vegetable Add-In: Layer sliced onions, carrots, and celery under the brisket before adding the seasonings. The vegetables will cook down into the gravy, adding natural sweetness and body.
- Herb-Forward: Increase the cowboy butter to 6 tablespoons and add an extra teaspoon of dried thyme and rosemary. The herbal notes become more pronounced, complementing the beef beautifully.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently with a splash of broth to keep the meat moist.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a covered saucepan over low heat, adding a little beef broth or water to loosen the gravy. Stir occasionally until heated through.
Store leftover brisket and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will meld and deepen overnight.
Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of beef broth or water if the gravy has thickened too much. For longer storage, freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
This recipe is perfect for making ahead. Assemble the brisket, seasoning packets, and cowboy butter in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate.
In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook on low as directed. You can also cook the brisket fully, shred it, and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days before serving. Reheat gently with a little broth.
Serving ideas
Serve the shredded brisket over warm buttered egg noodles, spooning plenty of the garlic-herb gravy over the top. The noodles soak up the flavorful sauce, making every bite rich and satisfying. For a low-carb option, serve over mashed cauliflower or roasted vegetables instead.
This dish also works well in sandwiches—pile the beef onto soft rolls and top with a spoonful of gravy for a French dip-style meal. Or serve it alongside crusty bread to mop up every last drop of the sauce. A simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette balances the richness. Leftovers are even better the next day.

Three-Packet Garlic Butter Beef Brisket

Ingredients
- 3 1/2 lb beef brisket, trimmed
- 1 oz dry ranch seasoning mix (1 packet)
- 0.7 oz zesty Italian dressing mix (1 packet)
- 0.87 oz brown gravy mix (1 packet)
- 4 tbsp garlic-herb compound cowboy butter, cold
- 12 oz buttered egg noodles, for serving
Instructions
- Place the trimmed beef brisket flat into the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Sprinkle the dry ranch seasoning, zesty Italian dressing mix, and brown gravy mix evenly over the entire surface of the roast, turning to coat if needed.
- Place the four thick medallions of garlic-herb compound cowboy butter across the top of the seasoned brisket. No need to spread; the butter will melt and baste the meat as it cooks.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours, until the brisket is fork-tender and easily shreds. The internal temperature should reach at least 145°F (63°C) for food safety, but for shredding, cook until the meat pulls apart easily. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Once the brisket is fork-tender, turn off the slow cooker. Let the brisket rest in the hot gravy for at least 10 minutes before shredding. This allows the juices to redistribute.
- Using two forks, shred the brisket directly in the slow cooker, mixing it with the garlic-herb gravy. Serve over warm buttered egg noodles, spooning extra gravy over the top.
