Tips for success
For the best texture, let the brisket rest in the hot liquid for at least 10 minutes after cooking. This allows the meat to reabsorb some of the juices, making it even more succulent.
When shredding, use two forks to pull the meat apart in the direction of the grain for long strands, or against the grain for shorter, more tender pieces.
If the gravy seems too thin, you can thicken it by mixing 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons cold water and stirring it into the hot liquid.
Let it bubble for a few minutes. If it's too thick, add a splash of beef broth or water. Taste and adjust seasoning—the packets are salty, so go easy on additional salt.
Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of your favorite hot sauce or a teaspoon of red pepper flakes along with the seasoning packets. The heat cuts through the richness and adds a nice layer of flavor.
- Herb Garden: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped rosemary or thyme over the brisket before cooking. The herbs infuse the gravy with a fragrant, earthy note that pairs beautifully with the butter.
- Smoky BBQ: Swap the brown gravy mix for 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika and 1 teaspoon of liquid smoke. The result is a smoky, barbecue-like brisket that's perfect for sandwiches.
- Mushroom Gravy: Add 8 oz sliced mushrooms to the bottom of the slow cooker before placing the brisket. They'll release moisture and add an earthy depth to the gravy, making it even more savory.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Keep the brisket submerged in the gravy to maintain moisture.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot. Add a splash of beef broth or water if the gravy has thickened too much.
Store leftover brisket and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will continue to meld, and the meat will stay moist if covered in the gravy. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or broth if needed.
This recipe is perfect for making ahead. Cook the brisket up to 2 days in advance, then refrigerate it in the gravy. Reheat slowly on the stovetop or in a 300°F (150°C) oven until hot. The meat can also be frozen for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve the shredded brisket over creamy mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or polenta, with a generous ladle of the buttery gravy. The rich sauce is the star, so don't skimp.
A side of roasted green beans or a crisp salad balances the richness. For a low-carb option, serve over cauliflower mash or alongside sautéed greens.
Leftovers make incredible sandwiches on toasted buns with a little coleslaw, or piled into tacos with pickled onions and cilantro.
The beef also freezes beautifully, so you can portion it out for quick meals later. However you serve it, this brisket is a crowd-pleaser that tastes like you spent hours at the stove—but you didn't.

Three-Packet Butter Beef Brisket (Slow Cooker)

Ingredients
- 3 1/2 lb beef brisket, trimmed
- 1 oz dry ranch seasoning mix
- 0.7 oz zesty Italian dressing mix
- 1 oz brown gravy mix
- 1/2 cup salted butter (1 stick)
Instructions
- Place the trimmed beef brisket flat in the bottom of a 6- to 7-quart slow cooker. It should sit in a single layer, touching the bottom as much as possible.
- Evenly sprinkle the dry ranch seasoning mix, zesty Italian dressing mix, and brown gravy mix over the entire surface of the brisket. Use your hands or a spoon to coat the top and sides as much as possible.
- Place the stick of salted butter directly on top of the seasoned brisket. It can sit whole or be cut into a few pats; either way works.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 5 to 6 hours, until the brisket is fork-tender and easily shreds. The internal temperature should reach at least 145°F (63°C) for food safety, but for shredding it will be much higher. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Turn off the slow cooker. Let the brisket rest in the hot liquid for at least 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute and makes shredding easier.
- Using two forks, shred the brisket directly in the slow cooker, mixing it with the seasoned butter gravy. The meat should pull apart easily into long, juicy strands.
- Spoon the shredded brisket and plenty of the buttery gravy over warm mashed potatoes or your favorite side. Serve immediately.
