Tips for success
For the best flavor, sear the pork shoulder in a hot skillet with a little oil before adding it to the slow cooker. This adds a deep, caramelized crust that enhances the overall taste.
However, if you're short on time, skipping this step is fine—the slow cooker will still produce a delicious result. Just be aware that searing adds an extra layer of complexity.
If you prefer a thicker gravy, remove the pork after shredding and whisk a cornstarch slurry into the liquid. Let it bubble for a few minutes until thickened, then return the pork to the pot.
For a brighter flavor, stir in a splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice just before serving. This cuts through the richness and balances the savory notes.
Variations
- Spicy Chipotle: Add 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, minced, along with the seasonings. This adds a smoky, spicy depth that pairs wonderfully with the richness of the pork. Serve with pickled onions for extra zing.
- Honey Garlic: Stir 1/4 cup honey and 4 cloves of minced garlic into the gravy before cooking. The sweetness balances the saltiness of the seasoning packets, creating a sticky, sweet-savory glaze that caramelizes slightly as it cooks.
- Balsamic Rosemary: Replace the brown gravy with 1 cup balsamic vinegar and 1 cup beef broth, and add 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary. The vinegar adds a tangy brightness that cuts through the fat, while the rosemary lends an earthy aroma.
- BBQ Pulled Pork: After shredding, toss the pork with 1 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce and let it simmer for 15 minutes. This turns the recipe into a classic BBQ pulled pork, perfect for sandwiches or tacos.
Storage and make-ahead

Store leftover pork in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will continue to meld, making it even more delicious the next day. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of broth or water if needed to loosen the gravy.
This recipe is perfect for making ahead. Cook the pork as directed, then let it cool completely before refrigerating. It can be made up to 2 days in advance.
Reheat slowly on the stovetop or in the slow cooker on low until heated through. You can also freeze the cooked pork for up to 3 months.

Three-Packet Brown Gravy Pork Shoulder

Ingredients
- 4 lb boneless Boston butt pork shoulder roast
- 1 oz dry ranch seasoning mix
- 0.7 oz zesty Italian dressing mix
- 1 oz brown gravy mix
- 2 cups savory brown bone-broth gravy
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pats
Instructions
- Place the pork shoulder roast in the center of the slow cooker insert. It's okay if it doesn't fit perfectly; it will shrink as it cooks.
- Evenly sprinkle the dry ranch seasoning, zesty Italian dressing mix, and brown gravy mix over the entire surface of the roast. Use your fingers to rub the seasonings in lightly if needed.
- Pour the brown bone-broth gravy over the roast, then dot the top with the butter pats. The liquid should come about halfway up the side of the roast.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 5 to 6 hours, until the pork is fork-tender and pulls apart easily. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Transfer the roast to a cutting board and let it rest for at least 3 minutes. Using two forks, shred the meat into bite-sized pieces, discarding any excess fat.
- Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and stir it into the gravy. Let it sit on the warm setting for 10 minutes so it soaks up the sauce.
- Spoon the saucy pulled pork onto toasted brioche slider buns or over mashed potatoes. Top with a little extra gravy from the slow cooker.
