Before you start

Before starting, ensure your slow cooker is clean and placed on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Wash and peel the apples if preferred, then core and slice them thinly.

Peel and slice the onion into uniform strips to ensure they soften evenly. Pat the chicken thighs dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture, which helps the seasonings adhere better to the surface.

Ingredients at a glance (5)
  • 4 pieces chicken thighs, bone-in and skin-on
  • 2 large apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cube chicken bouillon, crumbled
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

Preparation and Layering

  1. Assemble the Ingredients
Place the raw chicken thighs at the bottom of the slow cooker. Scatter the sliced apples and onions evenly over the top of the chicken pieces.
Look for ensure the chicken is in a single layer at the base
Tip arranging the chicken at the bottom ensures it cooks evenly in the juices

The chicken should be arranged in a single, even layer at the bottom of the slow cooker. The sliced apples and onions should be layered uniformly on top to allow their natural juices to infuse the meat as they cook. Verify that all ingredients are prepared and ready for the next step before continuing.

Seasoning and Liquid Addition

  1. Season and Add Cream
Crumble the chicken bouillon cube over the apple and onion mixture. Pour the heavy cream over the top to submerge the ingredients slightly.
Look for the cream should cover the base of the ingredients
Tip crumbling the bouillon cube ensures it distributes flavor throughout the sauce

The bouillon cube must be crumbled finely and sprinkled evenly to distribute the savory notes. The cream should be poured steadily to ensure it reaches the bottom of the vessel.

At this stage, the slow cooker should look well-prepared, with the liquids beginning to settle around the chicken and aromatics.

Cooking and Finishing

  1. Slow Cook and Serve
Cover the slow cooker and set to low heat for four hours. Once finished, ensure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Allow the chicken to rest for five minutes before serving.
Look for the chicken should be tender and falling off the bone
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip resting the meat allows the juices to redistribute for a better texture

After the cooking time, the chicken should look succulent and bathed in a light, creamy sauce. The aroma of cooked apples and onions should be pleasant and savory. Check that the chicken is tender and fully cooked through before turning off the slow cooker and allowing it to rest briefly.

Common mistakes

Avoid overcooking the chicken, as even thighs can become stringy if left in the slow cooker for too long. Do not lift the lid during the first few hours of cooking, as this releases essential heat and steam, which can significantly extend the necessary cooking time.

Additionally, ensure the bouillon is crumbled thoroughly; large chunks may result in uneven seasoning throughout the creamy sauce.

How to tell it’s done

The chicken is perfectly cooked when the meat is opaque throughout and pulls away easily from the bone with a fork. Use a meat thermometer to verify the internal temperature reaches at least 165°F (74°C) at the thickest part.

The sauce should be thickened and creamy, with the onions translucent and the apples tender but not completely disintegrated.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
