Tips for success
For the best texture, do not stir the slow cooker during the first 3 hours. This allows the pasta to absorb the sauce evenly without becoming gummy.
If the sauce seems too thin at the end, leave the lid off for 15 minutes to let it reduce slightly. If it is too thick, stir in a splash of warm water or extra marinara.
To get a slightly browned cheese top, switch the slow cooker to high for the last 30 minutes, or use a kitchen torch to brown the cheese just before serving. For a more traditional baked ziti texture, transfer the finished dish to a baking dish, top with extra mozzarella, and broil for 2-3 minutes until bubbly.
Variations
- Spicy Chicken Baked Ziti: Add 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes with the Italian herbs for a subtle heat. Or stir in a few dashes of hot sauce with the marinara. The spice balances the creamy cheese and adds a kick.
- Vegetarian Baked Ziti: Omit the chicken and use 2 cups of sliced mushrooms or a can of drained chickpeas. Add the vegetables with the pasta. The cooking time stays the same, and the dish is just as hearty.
- Sausage and Peppers Baked Ziti: Replace the chicken with 1 pound of ground Italian sausage, cooked and drained. Add a sliced bell pepper with the pasta. The sausage adds a savory depth that pairs well with the marinara.
- Garlic Butter Baked Ziti: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter and stir in 2 minced garlic cloves. Drizzle over the top before adding the cheeses. The garlic infuses the sauce as it cooks, giving a richer flavor.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Add a splash of water before reheating to restore the sauce's consistency.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a microwave or on the stovetop over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until hot and bubbly. Add a splash of water or marinara if needed.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The pasta will absorb more sauce as it sits, so add a splash of water or marinara when reheating.
Reheat individual portions in the microwave or in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until hot throughout. The dish also freezes well in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
This recipe can be assembled the night before. Layer the chicken, pasta, marinara, herbs, cream cheese, and mozzarella in the slow cooker insert. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on low for 4-5 hours. The cooking time may be slightly longer if starting from cold. Do not leave the slow cooker on warm for extended periods before cooking.
Serving ideas
Serve the chicken baked ziti hot, straight from the slow cooker. Use a large spoon to scoop up a generous portion, making sure to get some of the melted cheese from the top.
Pair it with a crisp green salad dressed with lemon vinaigrette to cut through the richness. Garlic bread or a crusty baguette is perfect for soaking up the extra sauce.
This dish is a complete meal on its own, but it also works well as a side dish for a larger spread. For a family dinner, set out bowls of grated Parmesan and red pepper flakes for everyone to add at the table. The leftovers are just as good the next day, so make extra if you want lunch ready to go.

Slow Cooker Mozzarella Garlic Chicken Baked Ziti

Ingredients
- 2 lb chicken breast tenderloins
- 1 lb ziti pasta
- 24 oz sweet basil marinara sauce
- 2 tsp Italian herb seasoning
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 2 cups shredded whole-milk mozzarella
Instructions
- Place the chicken breast tenderloins in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in an even layer. Add the ziti pasta on top of the chicken. Pour the marinara sauce over the pasta and chicken, then sprinkle with the Italian herb seasoning. Stir gently to coat everything with the sauce.
- Place the block of cream cheese in the center of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the top. Do not stir; leave the cream cheese and mozzarella on top as the slow cooker heats.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours, or until the chicken is cooked through and the pasta is tender. Do not lift the lid during the first 3 hours to keep the heat steady.
- After 4 hours, stir the mixture well to combine the melted cream cheese and mozzarella into the sauce. The chicken should be fork-tender and easily shredded. Check that the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) with an instant-read thermometer.
- Spoon the hot chicken baked ziti onto a white dinner plate. Serve immediately, scooping up plenty of melted cheese with each portion.
