Before you start

Before you start, pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels to help the glaze stick. Drain the pineapple tidbits well, discarding the juice. Slice the jalapeños into thin rings, removing seeds if you prefer less heat.

Mince the garlic. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, lime juice, garlic, salt, and pepper. Having everything measured and ready makes the dump-and-go process even easier.

Ingredients at a glance (10)
  • 2 lb split chicken wingettes and drumettes
  • 1 cup pineapple tidbits, drained
  • 2 fresh jalapeños, sliced into rings
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups cooked basmati rice, for serving

Instructions

Layer and Pour

  1. Layer the Ingredients
Place the chicken wingettes and drumettes in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Scatter the pineapple tidbits and sliced jalapeños over the chicken. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, lime juice, garlic, salt, and pepper. Pour the mixture evenly over the chicken and other ingredients.
Look for The chicken should be mostly covered by the sauce and fruit.
Tip No need to stir—the slow cooker will do the work.

At the start, the slow cooker will look like a colorful mixture of raw chicken, pineapple, jalapeños, and a glossy sauce. The aromas of honey, soy, and garlic begin to fill the kitchen. Everything should be well coated, but not swimming in liquid. This is the moment to trust the process—no stirring needed.

Slow-Cook to Tender

  1. Slow-Cook Until Tender
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours, or on high for 2 to 3 hours, until the chicken is tender and cooked through. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach at least 165°F (74°C).
Look for The chicken should be fall-apart tender and the sauce bubbling.
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip If you're home, baste the wings once halfway through for extra glaze.

After a few hours, the kitchen smells incredible—sweet, savory, and slightly spicy. The chicken is visibly shrinking and the sauce is bubbling around the edges.

The pineapple has softened and the jalapeños have mellowed. The sauce has darkened to a deep amber. Give the wings a gentle stir if you like, but they should be nearly fall-apart tender.

Serve with Rice

  1. Serve and Enjoy
Using tongs, transfer the chicken wings to a serving plate with steamed basmati rice. Spoon some of the glaze from the slow cooker over the top. Serve hot.
Look for The wings should be glistening with a sticky amber sauce.
Tip For extra caramelization, broil the wings for 2–3 minutes after cooking.

The final dish is a glossy, sticky mess of tender wings, caramelized pineapple, and softened jalapeños. The sauce coats the chicken beautifully. When you lift a wing, the meat should cling to the bone but pull away easily. Serve over steaming basmati rice to soak up every last drop of that irresistible glaze.

Common mistakes

One common mistake is adding too much liquid—the recipe as written has just enough to create a glaze. If you add extra broth or juice, the sauce will be thin. Another is lifting the lid too often, which lets heat escape and extends cooking time.

Resist the urge to stir; the slow cooker distributes flavors without help. Finally, don't overcrowd the slow cooker—use the correct size so the wings cook evenly.

How to tell it’s done

The chicken is done when it's fork-tender and easily pulls away from the bone. The internal temperature should read at least 165°F (74°C) on an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the wing, avoiding the bone.

The sauce should be thickened and cling to the chicken. If you like a thicker glaze, transfer the sauce to a saucepan and simmer on the stove for a few minutes to reduce.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
