Tips for success

For a more concentrated flavor, you can reduce the sauce after removing the wings. Pour the remaining liquid from the slow cooker into a small saucepan and simmer over medium-high heat until it reaches a syrup-like consistency.

This extra step provides a more intense glaze that can be brushed over the wings just before serving for an enhanced presentation and flavor impact.

If you prefer a bit of texture on the skin, you can transfer the cooked wings to a foil-lined baking sheet and place them under a preheated broiler for 2 to 3 minutes. Keep a very close eye on them to prevent the honey from burning, as the sugars can char quickly. This brief broiling step helps to slightly caramelize the honey glaze without drying out the tender meat.

Variations

  • Garlic Lemon Pepper: Add 3 cloves of minced garlic to the slow cooker along with the lemon slices. The garlic adds a savory depth that complements the bright lemon and sweet honey perfectly.
  • Spicy Herb Wings: Incorporate a tablespoon of dried oregano or thyme with the lemon pepper seasoning. These herbs introduce an earthy, Mediterranean-inspired profile that pairs exceptionally well with the citrus and honey.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer
Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Reheat
Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until the wings are heated through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

Allow any leftovers to cool to room temperature for no more than two hours before transferring them to an airtight container. Properly stored, the chicken wings will remain safe to eat in the refrigerator for up to three days. When reheating, ensure they are heated thoroughly until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to maintain safety and quality.

This dish is excellent for preparation ahead of time. You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker basin, cover it, and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before cooking.

Simply remove the basin from the fridge about 30 minutes before turning on the slow cooker to allow it to come closer to room temperature, which helps ensure the cooking times remain consistent.

Serving ideas

Serve these wings hot, directly from the platter, as a centerpiece for a casual gathering or a hearty main course. Because the sauce is sticky and rich, it is helpful to provide plenty of napkins for guests.

The bright, acidic notes of the lemon pepper and the heat of the honey pair beautifully with cooling side dishes like celery sticks, carrot sticks, or a simple cucumber salad to balance the richness.

For a more complete meal, consider serving the wings alongside a light side such as steamed jasmine rice or a crisp green salad with a vinaigrette dressing.

The sauce from the wings is excellent when drizzled over rice, making it a versatile component of the meal. Ensure that serving utensils are provided so that everyone can easily scoop up the extra honey glaze from the bottom of the serving platter.

Frequently asked questions

Can the wings be cooked on high instead of low?
While cooking on high is possible, the low setting is recommended for this recipe. Low heat allows the connective tissues in the wings to break down slowly, resulting in a much more tender and succulent texture that is less likely to dry out during the extended cooking time.
Why do the wings look pale after cooking?
Slow cooking uses moist heat, which does not brown or crisp the skin like frying or roasting. The wings will appear pale and soft, which is normal for this braising method. If a browned appearance is desired, the wings can be finished under a broiler for a few minutes.
Is it necessary to remove the lemon rinds before serving?
The lemon slices are edible after being slow-cooked, as the rind softens significantly. However, if a strong, bitter citrus flavor is not desired, the slices can be removed before serving. They serve primarily to infuse the sauce and the meat with bright lemon oils during the cooking process.

A platter of slow-cooked chicken wings glazed with hot honey and seasoned with lemon pepper.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb chicken wing flats and drumettes
  • 1 large lemon, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp lemon pepper seasoning
  • 1/2 cup hot honey

Instructions

  1. Place the raw chicken wing flats and drumettes into the basin of the slow cooker, ensuring they are evenly distributed. Tuck the thin lemon slices in between and around the wings to infuse them with citrus flavor during the cooking process.
  2. Evenly dust the chicken wings with the lemon pepper seasoning. Drizzle the hot honey over the wings, coating them as much as possible. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours until the wings are tender and cooked through to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  3. Once the cooking time is complete, carefully remove the wings from the slow cooker using tongs. Transfer them to a serving platter, drizzling any remaining sauce from the bottom of the slow cooker over the top. Let the wings rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken slightly.
