Tips for success
For the best flavor, use a good-quality condensed French onion soup.
If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and stir it into the sauce during the last 30 minutes of cooking. This will help thicken the sauce without altering the flavor.
To make this dish even easier, you can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before and refrigerate it overnight.
In the morning, simply place the insert in the slow cooker and start cooking. This is a great make-ahead option for busy mornings.
Variations
- Chicken Version: Substitute boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs for the turkey. Cook on LOW for 4-5 hours or until chicken reaches 165°F. Shred and serve as directed.
- Mushroom Addition: Add 8 oz sliced mushrooms along with the onions for an earthy flavor. Sauté them first for extra depth, or add them raw to the slow cooker.
- Herb Infusion: Add 1 teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary with the soup for a fragrant herbal note. Fresh herbs can be stirred in just before serving.
- Spicy Kick: Add 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the slow cooker for a subtle heat that balances the creamy sauce.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of broth or water if needed.
- Freezer

- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until hot. Add a little broth or water if the sauce has thickened.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will continue to meld, making it even more delicious the next day.
Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of broth or water if the sauce has thickened too much.
This dish can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance. Layer the ingredients in the slow cooker insert, cover, and refrigerate.
When ready to cook, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed, adding about 30 minutes to the cooking time if starting from cold.
Serving ideas
Serve the creamy turkey over buttered egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or rice. The sauce is rich and flavorful, so it pairs well with simple sides like steamed green beans or a crisp green salad. For a low-carb option, serve over cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles.
This dish also makes a wonderful filling for sandwiches or wraps. Pile the turkey and sauce onto toasted bread and top with a slice of Swiss cheese for a delicious French onion-inspired sandwich. Leftovers can be transformed into a quick and easy lunch the next day.

Slow Cooker French Onion Turkey Breast

Ingredients
- 2 lb boneless turkey breast cutlets
- 2 medium sweet onions (such as Vidalia), thinly sliced
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
- 12 oz buttered egg noodles, cooked
Instructions
- Place the turkey breast cutlets in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer. Scatter the sliced sweet onions evenly over the turkey. Pour the condensed French onion soup over the onions, making sure to cover the turkey as much as possible.
- Place the softened cream cheese block on top of the soup, and sprinkle the grated Parmigiano-Reggiano over everything. There is no need to mix; the cheeses will melt and blend during cooking.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours, or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the turkey is tender and shreds easily with a fork. The sauce should be bubbly and thickened.
- Using two forks, shred the turkey breast directly in the slow cooker. Stir the shredded turkey into the sauce so it is well coated. The sauce will be creamy and full of caramelized onion ribbons.
- Spoon the hot turkey mixture over cooked buttered egg noodles. Serve immediately, spooning extra sauce over each portion.
