Tips for success
For the best texture, stir the sausages gently when coating them to avoid breaking the casings.
If you prefer a thicker glaze, you can remove the sausages with a slotted spoon and let the sauce simmer uncovered for an extra 15–20 minutes, then return the sausages to the pot. This also helps concentrate the flavors further.
Make a double batch for large gatherings—just ensure your slow cooker is big enough. If you’re short on time, you can cook on LOW for 4–5 hours instead of HIGH for 2.5.
The result will be similar, but the sauce may reduce a bit less. Always taste the sauce before serving and add a pinch of salt or a splash of vinegar if it needs balancing.
Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes or a minced jalapeño to the slow cooker along with the other ingredients. For extra heat, use a spicy BBQ sauce or add a dash of hot sauce.
- Bourbon-Infused: Replace 1/2 cup of the Dr Pepper with bourbon. The alcohol will cook off, leaving a rich, smoky depth. Reduce the brown sugar to 1/4 cup to balance the sweetness.
- Honey-Mustard Twist: Swap the hickory BBQ sauce for a honey-mustard BBQ sauce and reduce the brown sugar to 2 tablespoons. Add 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard for extra tang.
- Smoky Maple: Use maple-flavored BBQ sauce and replace the brown sugar with 1/4 cup pure maple syrup. This gives a slightly different sweetness that pairs beautifully with the Dr Pepper.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of Dr Pepper to revive the glaze.
- Freezer
- Freeze cooled sausages and sauce in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through. Add a little Dr Pepper or water to thin the sauce if needed.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The sauce will thicken further when chilled; reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of Dr Pepper or water to loosen if needed. Keep the sausages submerged in the sauce to prevent them from drying out.
This recipe is perfect for making ahead. Combine all ingredients in the slow cooker insert, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
When ready to cook, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on HIGH as directed. You can also cook the full batch, cool, and refrigerate; then reheat gently before serving. The flavors actually deepen overnight.
Serving ideas
Serve the Lil' Smokies directly from the slow cooker to keep them warm throughout the party. Provide toothpicks for easy grabbing and a small bowl for discarded picks.
For a heartier spread, pair them with slider buns, pickles, and coleslaw. The sweet-savory glaze also makes them great alongside mac and cheese or baked beans.
For a polished presentation, transfer the sausages to a serving platter with a slotted spoon, leaving the excess sauce in the slow cooker. Garnish with chopped parsley or sliced green onions if desired, though the video keeps it simple. The glossy, mahogany glaze is visually striking on its own, so let the sausages shine.
