Tips for success

If the sauce appears too thin at the end of the cooking time, carefully remove the fish and shrimp, then set the slow cooker to high for a few minutes to reduce the liquid, or whisk in a tiny amount of cornstarch slurry to thicken it.

However, the cream and wine usually reduce to a perfect consistency on their own.

Serve this dish in shallow bowls to showcase the beautiful sauce. It pairs exceptionally well with crusty bread for dipping, or steamed baby potatoes and lightly sautéed greens to round out the meal.

The mild flavor of the cod allows for many different side dish combinations, so feel free to serve it alongside your favorite steamed vegetables.

Variations

  • Herb-Infused Variation: Add a tablespoon of fresh chopped tarragon or dill to the slow cooker before starting. The herbal notes pair beautifully with the white wine and cream, adding a layer of brightness to the finished dish.
  • Leek and Cod Variation: Replace half of the mushrooms with thinly sliced leeks. Sauté the leeks in a little butter until soft before adding to the slow cooker for a deeper, sweeter onion flavor that complements the cod.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat gently to avoid overcooking the fish.
Reheat
Reheat gently in a saucepan over low heat until warmed through, or use a microwave on a low setting, stirring carefully.

If there are leftovers, allow them to cool for no more than two hours at room temperature before transferring them to an airtight container. Keep the fish and sauce together to help maintain moisture during storage. Place in the refrigerator promptly to ensure food safety and quality.

This dish is best enjoyed immediately after cooking. While it can be prepared, it is not recommended to assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker hours in advance, as the raw fish and shrimp should remain cold until the cooking process begins. For the best quality, assemble and cook the dish fresh.

Serving ideas

Present the dish in individual serving bowls, ensuring that each portion receives a generous helping of the creamy mushroom and shrimp sauce.

The cod fillets are delicate, so use a wide spatula to transfer them carefully, keeping the pieces intact. A garnish of fresh herbs, such as chopped parsley or chives, can add a bright, fresh finish to the plate.

Because the sauce is rich and flavorful, consider serving this with simple, mild sides that complement rather than compete with the dish.

Steamed asparagus, blanched green beans, or a light salad with a vinaigrette dressing provide a nice contrast to the creamy, savory notes of the cod and shrimp. Keep the sides simple to let the main dish shine.

Frequently asked questions

Can other types of fish be used in this recipe?
Yes, other firm white fish fillets such as haddock, pollock, or halibut work well as substitutes for cod. Ensure that the fillets are of similar thickness to the cod to maintain consistent cooking times across the board.
Why is the fish falling apart when being served?
Cod is a naturally delicate fish that flakes easily once cooked. To keep the fillets intact, use a wide, flat spatula to lift them carefully from the slow cooker. Avoid stirring the dish while it cooks, as this can break the fish into smaller pieces.
Can this be cooked on the high setting to save time?
Cooking on high is not recommended for this recipe. Cod is a lean fish that can become tough and rubbery if cooked too quickly at higher temperatures. The low setting provides the gentle heat necessary to keep the fish tender and ensure the sauce cooks properly without curdling.

Ingredients

  • 4 fillets cod fillets, fresh
  • 8 oz sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cube fish bouillon cube
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Place the fresh cod fillets at the bottom of the slow cooker insert. Evenly scatter the sliced mushrooms over the top of the fish, followed by the shrimp. Ensure the ingredients are distributed in a relatively even layer to promote uniform cooking throughout the process.
  2. Crumble the fish bouillon cube directly over the shrimp and mushrooms. Pour the dry white wine and the heavy cream over the entire mixture. Do not stir the ingredients; the liquids will naturally settle around the fish as the slow cooker heats up.
  3. Cover the slow cooker and cook on the low setting for approximately 3 hours. The cod is done when it is opaque and flakes easily with a fork, reaching an internal temperature of at least 145°F (63°C). Serve immediately while hot, ensuring the creamy sauce is spooned over the fish.
Contains: fish, crustaceans, milk, sulfites
