Tips for success
For the best flavor, use a good-quality bourbon BBQ glaze that you enjoy eating on its own. If you want a stronger bourbon kick, add an extra tablespoon of bourbon to the glaze before pouring it over the chicken.
The alcohol will cook off, leaving behind a deep, warm flavor. If you prefer a thicker, more caramelized sauce, you can remove the chicken once it's cooked and reduce the sauce on the stovetop until it reaches your desired consistency.
To make the wings even more caramelized, you can place them under the broiler for a few minutes after they're done. This will give them a slightly charred, crispy edge. Just watch them closely so they don't burn.
For a more intense onion flavor, you can sauté the onions in a little butter before adding them to the slow cooker, but this adds extra steps and isn't necessary. The slow cooker will soften them perfectly on its own.
Variations
- Spicy Bourbon Wings: Add 1-2 teaspoons of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the bourbon BBQ glaze before pouring it over the chicken. For extra heat, sprinkle in some red pepper flakes along with the brown sugar. The spice balances the sweetness beautifully.
- Honey Garlic Wings: Replace the bourbon BBQ glaze with a mixture of 1/2 cup honey, 1/4 cup soy sauce, and 4 minced garlic cloves. Omit the brown sugar. The result is a sticky, savory-sweet glaze with a punch of garlic.
- Maple Mustard Wings: Swap the bourbon BBQ glaze for 1/2 cup pure maple syrup and 1/4 cup Dijon mustard. Reduce the brown sugar to 2 tablespoons. This variation is tangy, sweet, and slightly smoky—perfect for fall.
- Smoky Chipotle Wings: Add 1-2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, minced, to the bourbon BBQ glaze. Use smoked brown sugar if available. The chipotle adds a deep, smoky heat that pairs perfectly with the bourbon and molasses.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop until hot.
- Freezer
- Freeze cooled wings and sauce in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Add a splash of water or broth if the sauce has thickened too much.
Leftover wings and sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools; reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or chicken broth if needed to loosen it. The wings also freeze well for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
This recipe is perfect for making ahead. You can assemble everything in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed.
If you're short on time, you can also cook the wings ahead and reheat them gently before serving. The flavors continue to meld and deepen, so leftovers often taste even better the next day.
Serving ideas
Serve these wings as a main dish with creamy mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread to soak up the extra sauce. A simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette helps cut the richness.
For game day, pile the wings on a platter with celery and carrot sticks and plenty of napkins. The sticky glaze is irresistible, so have extra sauce on the side if you like.
These wings also work well as an appetizer or party food. Keep them warm in the slow cooker on the warm setting and let guests serve themselves with tongs. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color, if desired. The sweet and smoky flavor pairs well with cold beer or a crisp white wine.

Slow Cooker Bourbon Glazed Chicken Wings with Vidalia Onions

Ingredients
- 2 lb split chicken wingettes and drumettes
- 2 medium Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup bourbon BBQ glaze
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
Instructions
- Place the split chicken wingettes and drumettes in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in an even layer. Scatter the sliced Vidalia onions and minced garlic over the top of the chicken, spreading them out so they cover the meat evenly.
- Pour the bourbon BBQ glaze evenly over the chicken and onions. Sprinkle the dark brown sugar over the top, covering as much surface as possible. Do not stir; just let the ingredients sit in layers.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours, until the chicken is tender and cooked through. The internal temperature of the thickest wing should reach 165°F (74°C). Avoid opening the lid during cooking to keep the heat steady.
- If the sauce seems thin after the wings are cooked, remove the chicken to a plate and keep warm. Transfer the sauce to a saucepan and simmer over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes, until reduced and thickened. Return the wings to the sauce and toss to coat.
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer the glazed wings and caramelized onions to a serving platter. Spoon extra sauce over the top if desired. Serve hot, optionally over creamy mashed potatoes.
