Tips for success

For the smoothest texture, freeze the mango cubes before blending. This replaces the need for extra ice and keeps the drink thick and cold without diluting.

If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, add a teaspoon of honey or agave, but the mango and dragon fruit are often sweet enough on their own. Taste before adding any sweetener.

To make the chocolate swirl extra pretty, use a fine grater and sprinkle in a circular motion from a height. This creates an even, airy layer.

If you're serving this for a party, you can double the recipe and blend in batches. The smoothie is best served immediately, but you can keep it in the fridge for up to a day — just stir well before serving.

Variations

  • Berry Dragon Fruit: Replace the mango with a cup of frozen strawberries or raspberries for a tarter, berry-forward smoothie. The magenta color deepens, and the coconut milk still provides creaminess.
  • Green Tropical: Swap the mango for a ripe banana and add a handful of spinach. The dragon fruit still gives a pink tint, but the banana adds natural sweetness and extra body.
  • Spiced Coconut: Add a pinch of ground cardamom or cinnamon to the blender along with the fruit. The warm spice pairs beautifully with the coconut and mango, giving the smoothie a chai-like twist.
  • No-Chocolate Topping: For a dairy-free version, omit the coconut white chocolate and top with toasted shredded coconut or a sprinkle of coconut flakes. The smoothie remains creamy and vibrant.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Stir well before serving, adding a splash of coconut milk if it thickens too much.
Freezer
Freeze in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge and re-blend with a little coconut milk to restore creaminess.
Reheat
Not applicable — serve cold.

Store leftover smoothie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The texture will thicken as the coconut milk solidifies; stir in a splash of coconut milk or water to loosen it before drinking.

The grated chocolate is best added fresh, so store it separately if you plan to keep leftovers.

You can dice the dragon fruit and mango up to a day ahead and keep them in separate containers in the fridge.

Grate the coconut white chocolate and store it in a zip-top bag at room temperature. When ready to serve, simply blend the fruit with the coconut milk and ice, then top with the chocolate.

Serving ideas

Serve this smoothie in a tall glass with a wide straw or a spoon — it's thick enough to need one. For a brunch or party, pour it into small glasses and top with extra grated chocolate. The vibrant pink color makes it a beautiful addition to any table.

You can also serve it as a dessert drink, perhaps with a shortbread cookie on the side. If you like a bit of tang, a squeeze of lime juice adds a bright note, but the video version keeps it purely sweet and tropical. Enjoy it right away for the best texture.

Frequently asked questions

Can this smoothie be made without a blender?
A blender is essential for achieving the thick, smooth texture. Without one, you could mash the fruit with a fork and whisk in the coconut milk, but the result will be chunkier and less creamy. A food processor also works, but you may need to add a little more liquid to get it moving.
What is the best way to peel and dice dragon fruit?
Cut the dragon fruit in half lengthwise. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh, then slice it into strips and dice. The skin is not edible, so discard it. The flesh is firm but tender, so a sharp knife works best.
Can you use frozen dragon fruit instead of fresh?
Yes, frozen dragon fruit works well and can even make the smoothie colder without extra ice. Thaw it slightly before dicing, or add it directly to the blender. You may need to reduce the amount of ice to keep the texture thick.
Why does the smoothie separate when stored?
Coconut milk naturally separates as it sits, especially when chilled. This is normal. Give the smoothie a good stir or shake before serving. If it's too thick, add a splash of coconut milk or water to thin it out.
Can this smoothie be made vegan?
Yes, use a dairy-free coconut white chocolate or simply omit the chocolate topping. The smoothie itself is already vegan, as it contains only fruit, coconut milk, and ice. Check the chocolate label to ensure it's dairy-free.
