Tips for success
For a more intense crust flavor, brush the outside of the dough pockets with a small amount of garlic-infused olive oil before baking.
This adds a beautiful sheen and a savory aroma that complements the meatballs perfectly. You can also sprinkle a pinch of dried oregano or red pepper flakes over the dough if you enjoy a bit of extra heat.
When tearing off a meatball puff, serve it with a small side of extra warmed vodka sauce for dipping. This enhances the overall experience and ensures that every bite is as flavorful as the first.
If you are serving this at a party, consider setting up a small station with different dipping sauces to allow guests to customize their bites.
Variations
- Spicy Sausage Version: Swap the Wagyu meatballs for spicy Italian sausage. The heat from the sausage pairs beautifully with the creamy vodka sauce, adding an extra layer of flavor to the crust pockets.
- Vegetarian Pesto Twist: Replace the meatballs with roasted cherry tomatoes and bocconcini cheese. Use a vibrant basil pesto instead of vodka sauce in the center for a fresh, herbaceous variation.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil for up to 1 month.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a 375°F (190°C) oven until the crust is crisp and the center is hot.
Store any leftover pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To maintain the best texture, avoid stacking the slices directly on top of each other, as this can make the crust soggy. If possible, place a piece of parchment paper between the slices to prevent them from sticking.
You can prepare the dough and the meatballs a day in advance. Store the dough in the refrigerator and the cooked meatballs in a separate container. When ready to bake, bring the dough to room temperature for at least 30 minutes to make it pliable, assemble the pizza, and bake as directed for the best results.
Serving ideas
Serve this pizza hot, directly from the oven, to ensure the crust remains crispy and the cheese is perfectly melted.
Use a sharp pizza cutter to slice between the meatball pockets, making it easy for guests to pull off their own individual servings. Present it on a wooden board or a flat pizza pan for a rustic, appetizing look.
Pair this dish with a light, crisp side salad to balance the richness of the vodka sauce and the meat-filled crust.
The acidity of a simple vinaigrette-dressed salad cuts through the creaminess of the cheese, making each bite of pizza feel fresh and satisfying. It is a complete and impressive meal that requires very little extra effort to present beautifully.

Meatball Stuffed Crown Crust Pizza

Ingredients
- 1 lb pizza dough, store-bought or made ahead
- 12 mini wagyu meatballs, cooked
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 cup vodka sauce, store-bought or made ahead
- 2 tbsp grana padano cheese, freshly grated
- 2 tbsp fresh basil leaves, torn
Instructions
- Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface. Place twelve cooked mini Wagyu meatballs around the perimeter of the dough. Add a small amount of mozzarella cheese next to each meatball and fold the dough edges over, tucking them tightly to create individual pockets for each meatball.
- Transfer the prepared dough base to a preheated pizza stone or cast-iron skillet. Pour the vodka sauce into the center of the pizza and spread it evenly without touching the meatball pockets. Place in an oven preheated to 450°F (232°C) and bake until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling, ensuring the meatballs reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
- Remove the pizza from the oven carefully. Immediately shower the center with freshly grated Grana Padano cheese and scatter the torn fresh basil leaves over the top. Allow it to rest for five minutes before serving to ensure the sauce and cheese set slightly.
