Tips for success
For the crispiest crust, use panko breadcrumbs and press them firmly onto the chicken. Let the breaded cutlets rest for 5 minutes before frying—this helps the coating adhere.
Use a thermometer to maintain the oil temperature around 350°F (175°C) for even browning. If the oil is too hot, the crust will burn before the chicken cooks through.
To keep the salad from getting soggy, toss the romaine with the dressing just before assembling. If making ahead, store the dressing and romaine separately.
For extra flavor, add a pinch of black pepper or a squeeze of lemon juice to the salad. The garlic butter can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
Variations
- Spicy version: Add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the marinade and a few dashes of hot sauce to the Caesar dressing for a spicy kick.
- Grilled option: Instead of frying, grill the marinated chicken on a hot grill or grill pan for 4-5 minutes per side until cooked through. Skip the breading for a lighter version.
- Wrap style: Slice the cooked chicken and wrap it in a large flour tortilla with the Caesar salad, extra parmesan, and a drizzle of dressing. Serve as a burrito-style wrap.
- Gluten-free adaptation: Use gluten-free panko breadcrumbs and gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps. Ensure the Caesar dressing is gluten-free. The rest of the ingredients are naturally gluten-free.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftover chicken and assembled sandwiches in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Keep the salad and buns separate if possible.
- Freezer
- Freeze the breaded, uncooked cutlets in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
- Reheat
- Reheat fried chicken in a 375°F (190°C) oven or air fryer for 5-7 minutes until hot and crispy. Avoid microwaving, as it will make the crust soggy.
Store leftover fried chicken and assembled sandwiches in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The salad and buns are best enjoyed fresh, so store components separately if possible. Reheat the chicken in a toaster oven or air fryer to restore crispiness.
The chicken can be breaded up to 4 hours in advance and kept refrigerated. The garlic butter can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to a week. The Caesar salad can be prepped (chopped romaine, shaved parmesan) but toss with dressing only when ready to serve.
Serving ideas
Serve the sandwiches immediately after assembling to enjoy the contrast of crunchy cutlet, cool salad, and warm toasted bun.
Pair with extra Caesar salad on the side, or a bowl of tomato soup for a comforting meal. The sandwich is hearty enough for lunch or dinner, and it also works well for a casual gathering.
For a lighter side, serve with fresh fruit or a simple green salad. The lemon-herb flavors are bright and refreshing, so a citrusy iced tea or sparkling water with lemon makes a great beverage.
These sandwiches are best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be reheated in the oven or air fryer for a quick meal.

Lemon Herb Crispy Chicken Caesar Sandwich

Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 tbsp lemon zest
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil, for frying
- 4 brioche burger buns
- 3 tbsp garlic butter, softened
- 2 cups romaine hearts, chopped
- 1/3 cup Caesar dressing
- 1/2 cup shaved parmesan
Instructions
- Place each chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound to an even 1/2-inch thickness. In a shallow dish, whisk the lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes or up to 2 hours.
- Place the flour in one shallow dish. Beat the eggs in a second dish. Put the panko in a third dish. Working one piece at a time, dredge the chicken in flour, shaking off excess, then dip in egg, letting excess drip off, then press into panko to coat thoroughly. Transfer to a plate.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the breaded cutlets in a single layer, working in batches if needed. Cook for 3 minutes per side, until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Transfer to a wire rack and let rest for 5 minutes.
- Spread the garlic butter on the cut sides of the brioche buns. Heat a clean skillet over medium heat. Place the buns cut-side down and toast for 1-2 minutes, until golden and fragrant. Remove and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, combine the chopped romaine, Caesar dressing, and shaved parmesan. Toss to coat evenly.
- Place a crispy chicken cutlet on each bottom bun. Top with a generous handful of the Caesar salad. Close with the top bun and press gently. Serve immediately.
