Tips for success
For a cleaner dip, use a fork or a dipping tool to lower the ball into the candy and lift it out, letting the excess drip back into the bowl. If you don't have a dipping tool, you can use two forks or a skewer.
To avoid a pool of candy at the bottom, tap the fork gently on the edge of the bowl to remove excess before placing the ball on the parchment.
If you want to add faces to your jack-o'-lanterns, you can attach small candy eyes or use a toothpick to draw simple faces with black food coloring or melted dark chocolate.
The video shows plain pumpkins, but you can easily customize them for a spookier look. Just make sure any decorations are added while the candy is still wet so they stick.
Variations
- Chocolate Faces: After the orange coating sets, use a toothpick or piping bag with melted dark chocolate to draw classic jack-o'-lantern faces on the treats. This adds a spooky touch and a hint of chocolate flavor.
- Green Leaves: Add a small leaf shape made from green candy melts or a fresh mint leaf to the base of the pretzel stem for a more realistic pumpkin look. Press it on while the candy is still wet.
- Spiced Coating: Mix a pinch of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon into the melted orange candy before dipping. This gives the treats a warm, autumnal flavor that complements the sweetness.
- White Chocolate Drizzle: After the orange coating sets, drizzle with melted white chocolate or white candy melts for a decorative effect. This adds a creamy contrast and makes them look even more festive.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Do not refrigerate, as the candy coating may become sticky.
- Freezer
- Can be frozen for up to 1 month. Place in a single layer in a freezer-safe container. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
- Reheat
- No reheating needed. Serve at room temperature for the best texture.
Store the jack-o'-lantern treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. They will stay fresh and the candy coating will remain shiny. Avoid stacking them directly on top of each other, as the pretzel stems may break. Place a sheet of parchment paper between layers if you need to stack them.
You can make these treats up to 2 days in advance. After they are fully set, store them in an airtight container at room temperature.
They are best enjoyed within 2 days, as the crispy rice treats may start to soften over time. If making for a party, you can assemble them the day before and keep them covered until serving.
Serving ideas
Serve these jack-o'-lantern treats as a festive dessert at Halloween parties, school events, or as a fun after-school snack. They are perfect for kids to help make and even more fun to eat.
Place them on a platter lined with orange or black napkins to match the theme. They are also great for Halloween-themed gift bags or party favors.
These treats are best enjoyed at room temperature. The crispy rice base is chewy and soft, while the candy coating provides a satisfying snap. The salty pretzel stem adds a nice contrast to the sweet coating. They are a delightful treat that appeals to both kids and adults, and they are sure to disappear quickly.

Quick Jack-O'-Lantern Crispy Rice Treat Balls

Ingredients
- 12 store-bought crispy rice treats (or homemade, cooled)
- 1 cup orange candy melts
- 12 pretzel sticks (short, for stems)
Instructions
- If using store-bought crispy rice treats, gently mold each one into a smooth, round ball about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. If using homemade, take about 2 tablespoons of the mixture and press it firmly into a ball. Place the formed balls on the parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
- Melt the orange candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and fully melted. Using a fork or dipping tool, carefully dip each rice ball into the melted candy, turning to coat evenly. Lift the ball out and let the excess drip off, then place it back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Immediately after dipping, while the candy is still wet, gently press a pretzel stick into the top center of each ball to form the pumpkin stem. Hold it in place for a few seconds so it sticks. Let the treats set at room temperature until the candy is firm, about 10 minutes.
