Before you start
Before starting, make sure the bananas are frozen solid—slice them and freeze for at least 2 hours, or overnight. Gather all the ingredients: frozen banana coins, chopped pistachios, grated matcha white chocolate, matcha powder, pistachio butter, vanilla milk, and ice cubes.
Have a box grater ready for the chocolate. If the pistachio butter is firm, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften. Set out two tall glasses for serving. The whipped cream should be chilled and ready to use.

Instructions
Prep the Ingredients
- Prep the fruit and toppingsSlice the frozen bananas into coins and set them aside. Chop the shelled green pistachios into small pieces. Grate the ceremonial matcha white chocolate on a box grater into a fresh pile of emerald matcha chocolate curls. Keep the toppings separate for later use.Look for The banana coins should be evenly thick; the chocolate curls should be light and fluffy.Tip Work quickly with the frozen bananas so they stay cold; if they start to thaw, return them to the freezer for a few minutes.
- Measure the smoothie baseMeasure the ceremonial grade matcha powder, roasted pistachio butter, vanilla milk, and ice cubes. Have all the ingredients ready beside the blender pitcher so the blending goes smoothly.Look for All ingredients are measured and within reach.Tip Using cold vanilla milk helps keep the smoothie thick and cold.
At the end of this phase, the frozen banana coins are ready, the pistachios are chopped into small pieces, and the matcha white chocolate is grated into light, fluffy emerald curls.
The toppings are all prepped and set aside. The smoothie base ingredients are measured and within reach. The kitchen smells faintly of pistachio and chocolate, and the texture of the chocolate curls is airy and delicate.
Blend the Smoothie
- Add base ingredients to blenderAdd the frozen banana coins, ceremonial grade matcha powder, roasted pistachio butter, vanilla milk, and ice cubes into the glass blender pitcher. Lock the lid securely in place.Look for The pitcher is filled about halfway; the lid is locked.Tip If the blender has a tamper, use it to push the ingredients down while blending.
- Blend into a thick vortexBlend on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and thick, scraping down the sides as needed. The smoothie should form a swirling vortex in the pitcher and have a creamy, pourable consistency.Look for The smoothie is emerald green, thick, and moves as a single mass; no chunks remain.Tip Stop and scrape the sides once or twice to ensure everything is fully blended.
After blending, the smoothie should be thick, creamy, and a uniform emerald green. It should move as a single mass in the blender, and when you stop the blender, it should slowly settle. There should be no visible ice chunks or banana pieces. The consistency should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, and the aroma is a mix of matcha, banana, and pistachio.
Assemble and Serve
- Pour into glassesPour the thick creamy emerald green matcha pistachio smoothie from the blender pitcher into a crystal glass or tall serving glass, dividing it evenly between two glasses.Look for The smoothie pours slowly and holds its shape slightly.Tip Use a spatula to scrape out every last bit from the pitcher.
- Top and serveFinish each glass with a generous swirl of whipped cream, a sprinkle of crushed green pistachios, and a shower of matcha chocolate shavings. Serve immediately while cold.Look for The whipped cream sits on top, the pistachios and shavings are scattered evenly.Tip For a prettier presentation, use a fine grater for the chocolate shavings.
The smoothie is poured into glasses, topped with a generous swirl of whipped cream, a sprinkle of crushed pistachios, and a shower of matcha chocolate shavings. The presentation is vibrant: the green smoothie contrasts with the white cream and green pistachios. The drink is served immediately, with the whipped cream holding its shape and the chocolate shavings beginning to soften.
Common mistakes
One common mistake is using bananas that are not fully frozen, which results in a thin, watery smoothie. Another is over-blending, which can cause the smoothie to become too thin and frothy.
Start on low speed and gradually increase to high, stopping as soon as the mixture is smooth. Also, be sure to scrape down the sides of the blender to ensure even blending. If the matcha powder is clumpy, sift it before adding to the blender to avoid green lumps.
How to tell it’s done
The smoothie is done when it is completely smooth, thick, and a vibrant emerald green. It should pour slowly from the blender and hold a slight swirl when poured into the glass. There should be no visible chunks of banana or ice.
The consistency should be similar to a thick milkshake—if it is too thin, add more frozen banana or ice; if too thick, add a splash of milk. The toppings are added after pouring, so the smoothie itself should be ready to serve immediately.
