Before you start

Before starting, ensure your oven is fully preheated to 375°F (190°C) to ensure the dough rises correctly and turns golden. Take your crescent dough out of the refrigerator just a few minutes before you are ready to assemble, as cold dough is much easier to unroll and handle.

Have your baking dish, a small bowl for the butter glaze, and a whisk ready on your counter. Pre-slicing your ham or arranging your cheese slices nearby will help the assembly process go quickly and efficiently.

Ingredients at a glance (6)
  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 lb deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds

Instructions

Assembling the Base

  1. Prepare the base
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish lightly with non-stick spray or butter. Unroll one package of the crescent roll dough and press it into the bottom of the prepared baking dish, sealing any seams to create an even base layer.
Look for The dough should cover the bottom of the dish completely with no large gaps.
Tip If the dough tears, simply pinch the edges together to seal the seam.
  2. Layer the fillings
Fold the deli ham slices neatly and arrange them in an even layer over the bottom dough. Place the Swiss cheese slices on top of the ham, ensuring they are evenly distributed across the entire surface to guarantee cheesy goodness in every single bite.
Look for The ham and cheese should create a uniform, flat layer for consistent cooking.
Tip Folding the ham instead of laying it flat creates more texture.

The base layer should be uniform and smooth, with the ham and cheese arranged evenly across the dish. Check that there are no large gaps between the dough and the sides of the pan to ensure the filling stays inside as it bakes. The layers should look neat and ready for the butter drizzle.

Glazing and Sealing

  1. Apply the glaze
In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, and poppy seeds until well combined. Drizzle this mixture evenly over the ham and cheese layer, ensuring the edges of the dish receive some of the butter for extra crispiness during the baking process.
Look for The butter mixture should look emulsified and smooth before drizzling.
Tip Use a pastry brush if necessary to distribute the butter evenly.
  2. Top and bake
Unroll the second package of crescent dough and drape it over the top of the ham and cheese. Seal the edges by pinching the top dough to the bottom layer. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the dough is cooked through.
Look for The top should be a deep golden brown and the dough should feel firm.
Tip Check the oven at 15 minutes to prevent the top from browning too quickly.

The butter mixture should be drizzled evenly over the assembled layers to ensure every part of the top dough gets coated. After placing the top sheet of dough, confirm that the edges are securely pinched to the bottom layer. The assembly should look like a complete, sealed package ready for the oven.

Baking and Serving

  1. Rest and serve
Remove the baking dish from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before slicing. This resting period allows the cheese to set slightly, making the sliders easier to cut into neat squares. Use a sharp knife or spatula to cut into equal portions and serve warm.
Look for The cheese should be melted and gooey when you cut through the layers.
Tip A serrated knife works best to cut through the flaky crust without squishing it.

The sliders should emerge from the oven with a deep golden, flaky crust. The kitchen should smell like buttery pastry and melted cheese. Before serving, check that the center is hot and the cheese is fully melted. Let them rest until the crust is slightly firmer, making them easy to slice.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is overcrowding the dish, which can prevent the dough from baking through evenly. Ensure you are using a 9x13 inch dish to give the dough enough room to expand.

Another error is not sealing the seams of the dough properly; take a moment to pinch the top and bottom dough layers together around the edges to prevent the melted cheese from leaking out.

Finally, do not skip the resting time, as cutting into them too early will cause the soft, hot cheese to spill out.

How to tell it’s done

The sliders are done when the top layer of crescent dough is a rich, golden brown and feels firm to the touch. The cheese should be completely melted and slightly bubbly around the edges where it meets the dough.

You can insert a small knife into the center of the sliders; if it comes out hot and the cheese is fully melted, they are ready to be removed from the oven. Allow them to rest for at least 5 minutes before cutting to ensure the layers hold together.
