Tips for success

For a more intense flavor, consider adding finely diced onions or bell peppers to the beef while browning. These aromatics add depth and texture to the filling.

If a spicier profile is preferred, a dash of red pepper flakes or hot sauce can be mixed into the beef. Experimenting with different cheese varieties, such as sharp white cheddar or smoked gouda, can also provide a unique twist to the classic cheeseburger taste.

Serving this dish alongside a bright, acidic side, such as a crisp vinegar-based coleslaw or a garden salad with a lemon vinaigrette, helps to balance the richness of the buttery pastry and melted cheese.

The acidity cuts through the fat, making each bite more enjoyable. If serving to a larger crowd, consider cutting the bake into smaller squares to ensure everyone gets a taste of the crispy, cheesy edges.

Variations

  • Spicy Jalapeno Version: Add finely diced fresh or pickled jalapenos to the beef mixture before assembling the rolls. This adds a pleasant heat that pairs perfectly with the cheddar cheese and crispy bacon.
  • Mushroom and Swiss: Substitute the cheddar with Swiss cheese and add sautéed mushrooms to the ground beef mixture. This variation provides a more earthy and sophisticated flavor profile for the crescent bake.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Ensure the food cools to room temperature within 2 hours before placing it in the refrigerator.
Freezer
Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil; freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Reheat
Place in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes or until heated through. Microwave reheating is possible but may result in a softer crust.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container to maintain moisture. The dish can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days. Ensure the food cools to room temperature within 2 hours before placing it in the refrigerator. For best results, place a piece of parchment paper between layers if stacking to prevent the rolls from sticking together.

The beef filling can be prepared one day in advance and kept in the refrigerator until ready to assemble. However, it is recommended to assemble and bake the dish just before serving to ensure the crescent rolls are as fresh and crispy as possible.

If planning ahead, keep the dough refrigerated until the very last moment to maintain its texture and ease of handling during assembly.

Serving ideas

Serve this dish warm, ideally directly from the baking dish, to maintain the texture of the melted cheese and crispy pastry. It works exceptionally well as a central dish for a casual dinner or a weekend gathering. Present it with a garnish of freshly chopped parsley to add a touch of color and freshness to the finished plate.

Consider offering a variety of dipping sauces on the side, such as mustard, ketchup, or a seasoned fry sauce, to allow guests to customize their portions.

Because the dish is quite hearty, smaller portions are often sufficient, especially when accompanied by lighter vegetable-based side dishes. This ensures a balanced and satisfying meal that highlights the flavors of the bacon and cheeseburger filling.

Frequently asked questions

Can this dish be prepared in advance?
While the beef filling can be cooked ahead of time, it is best to assemble and bake the crescent rolls just before serving. This ensures the pastry remains flaky and light rather than becoming soggy.
What is the best way to reheat leftovers?
Reheating in a conventional oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes is the best method to restore the texture of the crescent roll crust. Microwaving is faster but can make the dough soft.
Can other types of cheese be used?
Yes, various cheeses work well in this recipe. Pepper jack provides a spicy kick, while mozzarella offers a superior melt. A blend of cheeses can also be used to create a more complex flavor profile.

A golden-brown bacon cheeseburger crescent bake in a glass dish, garnished with fresh parsley.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices cooked crispy bacon, crumbled
  • 3 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley, for serving

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat until fully cooked through. Ensure the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) to verify the meat is safe to serve. Drain any excess grease from the pan and set the meat aside to cool slightly before assembly.
  2. Unroll one can of crescent dough into the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread the cooked ground beef evenly over the dough. Sprinkle one cup of the shredded cheddar cheese and half of the crumbled bacon on top. Place the second can of crescent dough over the filling, sealing the edges of the dough to enclose the mixture securely.
  3. Whisk the melted butter and garlic powder in a small bowl. Brush this mixture over the top of the dough. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with remaining cheese, remaining bacon, and fresh parsley. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
