Before you start

Before starting, ensure all ingredients are gathered and the slow cooker is positioned on a flat, stable surface. Melt the butter in a glass measuring cup using a microwave or a small saucepan, ensuring it is fully liquid but not boiling.

Have a rubber spatula ready to help distribute the dry ingredients evenly across the base. Check that the slow cooker insert is clean and free of any debris that could affect the final texture of the cake.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 handful semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 packet instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

Layering the ingredients

  1. Prepare the slow cooker base
Add the dry chocolate cake mix directly into the bottom of the slow cooker insert. Spread it out evenly with a spatula to ensure a level foundation for the subsequent layers.
Look for cake mix is evenly distributed at the bottom of the cooker
Tip Ensure the slow cooker insert is clean and dry before adding the mix to prevent sticking.
  2. Layer the toppings
Scatter the handful of chocolate chips over the cake mix layer. Follow this by sprinkling the dry instant chocolate pudding mix evenly over the chocolate chips, covering the surface completely.
Look for pudding mix forms a thin, even layer over the chips
Tip Do not stir the layers; the dump cake method relies on the distinct layering to create the texture.

The cake mix, chocolate chips, and pudding mix should form distinct, level layers within the slow cooker insert. The surface should look uniform and dry before adding the butter.

Ensure the chocolate chips are scattered throughout rather than concentrated in one spot to guarantee a consistent distribution of flavor.

Cooking the cake

  1. Add the butter and cook
Pour the melted butter evenly over the top of the pudding layer, trying to cover as much of the dry mix as possible. Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on low for two hours.
Look for butter has seeped into the dry ingredients
Tip Avoid lifting the lid during the cooking process to maintain the internal temperature and ensure even baking.

The butter should be fully absorbed into the dry layers, and the cake should begin to release a pleasant, warm chocolate aroma. The edges of the cake will start to pull away slightly from the sides of the slow cooker insert, indicating that the structure is setting while the center remains molten.

Resting and serving

  1. Finish and serve
Once the cooking time is complete, turn off the slow cooker and allow the cake to rest for 10 minutes. This helps the molten center thicken slightly before serving onto plates.
Look for edges are set while the center remains glossy and soft
Tip Serve warm to enjoy the best consistency of the chocolate lava center.

The cake should look glossy on top with a firm perimeter. After the 10-minute rest, the center will appear thick and slightly settled. The cake is ready to be scooped onto plates, showcasing the contrast between the tender cake top and the rich, molten chocolate sauce beneath.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is stirring the ingredients after adding them to the slow cooker. The dump cake relies on the specific order of the layers to achieve the correct texture; mixing them will result in a dense, uniform cake rather than the desired molten lava effect.

Another error is lifting the lid frequently during the cooking process. Each time the lid is opened, heat and moisture escape, which can significantly increase the cooking time and lead to a dry, unevenly cooked dessert.

How to tell it’s done

The dump cake is done when the edges appear firm and slightly risen, while the center remains soft and glossy. A toothpick inserted into the outer edge of the cake should come out relatively clean, but the middle will remain intentionally molten.

Allow the cake to rest for at least 10 minutes after turning off the heat; this short resting period is critical for the molten lava center to set slightly, making it easier to scoop and serve without it being overly runny.
