Tips for success
For the best texture, use a high-quality jarred Alfredo sauce with real cream and Parmesan. If the sauce seems too thick after cooking, stir in a splash of warm milk or chicken broth.
If it's too thin, let it sit uncovered for a few minutes or stir in an extra 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan. The pasta will absorb more sauce as it rests, so don't be alarmed if it looks saucy at first.
To add a little heat, use hot Italian sausage or add a pinch of red pepper flakes when layering. For extra vegetables, add sliced mushrooms or bell peppers with the broccoli.
The dish is very forgiving — feel free to swap the broccoli for zucchini or spinach (add spinach in the last 30 minutes). Serve with a crisp green salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
Variations
- Spicy Sausage Version: Use hot Italian sausage or add 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes when browning the meat. The heat pairs well with the creamy Alfredo and adds a nice kick without overwhelming the dish.
- Chicken Alfredo Penne: Replace the sausage with 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces. Brown the chicken in the skillet until golden, then proceed with the recipe. Cook until the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C).
- Vegetarian Broccoli Alfredo: Omit the sausage and add an extra cup of broccoli florets and a handful of sliced mushrooms. The Alfredo sauce and cheeses provide plenty of flavor, and the vegetables become tender and satisfying.
- Gluten-Free Pasta Option: Use gluten-free penne pasta and verify that the Alfredo sauce is gluten-free. Reduce the cooking time to 2 1/2 to 3 hours, as gluten-free pasta can become mushy more quickly. Check for tenderness at 2 hours.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools; add a splash of milk or broth when reheating.
- Freezer
- Freeze in airtight containers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
- Reheat
- Reheat individual portions in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring in between.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The pasta will continue to absorb sauce as it sits, so add a splash of milk or chicken broth when reheating to restore a creamy texture. Reheat gently in the microwave or in a skillet over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through.
You can brown the sausage and chop the broccoli up to 2 days ahead, storing them separately in the refrigerator. Assemble the slow cooker the night before, but do not turn it on — keep the insert in the refrigerator and start cooking in the morning.
Add 30 minutes to the cooking time if starting from cold. Alternatively, cook the full recipe and freeze portions for later.
Serving ideas
Serve this pasta hot, straight from the slow cooker, with a generous spoonful of the creamy sauce. A side of garlic bread or a simple green salad with lemon vinaigrette balances the richness.
For a touch of freshness, sprinkle with chopped parsley or basil before serving — though the video doesn't include it, it's a nice optional addition.
This dish is hearty enough to be a main course on its own. Pair it with a light red wine, such as a Chianti or Pinot Noir, and offer extra grated Parmesan at the table. The leftovers make a great lunch the next day — just reheat gently and enjoy. The creamy, cheesy sauce is best enjoyed fresh, but it's still delicious reheated.

Crockpot Parmesan Sausage Alfredo Penne: Dump-and-Forget Dinner

Ingredients
- 1 lb sweet Italian pork sausage, casings removed
- 12 oz penne pasta
- 3 cups fresh broccoli florets
- 1 jar (15 oz) creamy garlic Parmesan Alfredo sauce
- 2 cups shredded Italian four-cheese blend
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and cook, breaking it into small crumbles with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain any excess fat if desired.
- Place the browned sausage in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the penne pasta and broccoli florets on top. Pour the Alfredo sauce over everything, but do not stir.
- Sprinkle the shredded Italian four-cheese blend and the freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano evenly over the top of the slow cooker contents. Do not stir.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours, until the pasta is tender and the sauce is bubbling around the edges. Do not lift the lid during the first 2 hours.
- Turn off the slow cooker. Stir the pasta well to distribute the sauce and melted cheese. Let the dish rest, uncovered, for 5 minutes so the sauce thickens slightly.
- Spoon the hot pasta onto a white dinner plate or into bowls. Serve immediately, with extra grated Parmesan on the side if desired.
