Tips for success
For extra caramelization, you can brown the kielbasa in a skillet for a few minutes before adding it to the slow cooker. This adds a deeper flavor but isn't necessary—the slow cooker does a great job on its own.
If you prefer a crispier cheese top, transfer the cooked pasta to a broiler-safe dish, sprinkle with extra Parmesan, and broil for 2-3 minutes until bubbly and browned.
To prevent the pasta from sticking to the sides of the slow cooker, make sure the sauce covers the pasta completely. If the sauce seems too thick, add a splash of water or broth at the beginning.
For a creamier texture, stir in a dollop of ricotta cheese just before serving. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop.
Variations
- Spicy Sausage: Replace the smoked kielbasa with a spicy smoked sausage, and use a marinara with red pepper flakes. Add a pinch of cayenne to the cheese layer for extra heat.
- Vegetarian: Omit the kielbasa and add a can of drained chickpeas or a cup of sautéed mushrooms for a protein-rich alternative. The cooking time stays the same.
- Cheesy Meatball: Swap the kielbasa for frozen cooked meatballs (about 1 pound). Add them directly to the slow cooker, and proceed with the recipe as written.
- Creamy Rosé: Stir 1/2 cup of heavy cream into the marinara sauce before layering. This creates a richer, rosé-style sauce that pairs beautifully with the cheeses.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently with a splash of water to restore sauce consistency.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or in a saucepan over medium heat with a splash of water or marinara until hot.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The pasta will continue to absorb sauce, so you may want to add a splash of water or marinara when reheating.
Let the dish cool for no more than 2 hours before refrigerating. Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or reheat the whole batch in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring gently, until hot.
This recipe is perfect for meal prep. Assemble the layers in the slow cooker insert, cover, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours. You can also cook the full dish, let it cool, and freeze it for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve this baked ziti straight from the slow cooker, scooping generous portions onto plates. A side of garlic bread or a simple green salad with lemon vinaigrette balances the richness.
For a family-style dinner, place the slow cooker on the table with a large spoon and let everyone help themselves. The dish is hearty enough to be a main course, but it also works as a side dish for grilled meats.
Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired, though the video keeps it simple. For a more indulgent meal, top each serving with a dollop of ricotta or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. The leftovers are just as delicious the next day, so consider making extra for lunches. Pair with a medium-bodied red wine like Chianti or Sangiovese.

Crockpot Parmesan Kielbasa Baked Ziti: Dump and Forget

Ingredients
- 2 lb smoked kielbasa, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
- 1 lb ziti pasta
- 4 cups sweet basil marinara sauce
- 2 tsp Italian herb seasoning
- 2 cups shredded Italian four-cheese blend
- 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Instructions
- Place the sliced smoked kielbasa evenly in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the ziti pasta, then pour the marinara sauce over the top. Sprinkle with Italian herb seasoning. Do not stir.
- Sprinkle the shredded Italian four-cheese blend over the sauce, then finish with the grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. Cover the slow cooker with the lid.
- Set the slow cooker to LOW and cook for 4 hours, or until the pasta is tender and the sauce is bubbling around the edges. Do not lift the lid during the first 3 hours.
- After 4 hours, check the pasta by lifting a piece from the center with a fork. It should be tender but still have a slight bite. If the pasta is still firm, cover and cook for another 30 minutes.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the pasta bake rest, uncovered, for 10 minutes. This allows the sauce to thicken slightly and the cheese to set.
- Using a large spoon, scoop the baked ziti onto a white dinner plate, lifting from the bottom to get the caramelized kielbasa and cheesy sauce. Serve hot.
