Before you start

Before starting, ensure that all turkey patties are fully thawed if they were previously frozen. Clear your workspace and gather all ingredients including the onion rings, garlic powder, and the creamy soup base.

Verify that your slow cooker is clean and positioned on a level, heat-resistant surface away from any water sources. Having your ingredients pre-measured will make the assembly process move quickly, allowing you to get the slow cooker running in just a few minutes of active preparation time.

Ingredients at a glance (4)
  • 5 raw ground turkey patties
  • 1 cup yellow onion, sliced into rings
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 10.5 oz cream of chicken soup with Dijon mustard

Instructions

Assembly and Seasoning

  1. Prepare the slow cooker
Place the raw ground turkey patties into the bottom of the slow cooker insert, arranging them in a single layer or a ring to ensure even cooking.
Look for Patties are arranged in a ring
Tip Ensure the patties do not overlap too much to allow the sauce to circulate.
  2. Add aromatics and seasoning
Scatter the yellow onion rings evenly over the turkey patties. Sprinkle the garlic powder over the onions and the meat to distribute the flavor.
Look for Onions are distributed evenly
Tip Use a light hand when sprinkling the garlic powder to avoid clumps.

The patties are neatly arranged in the base of the slow cooker, topped with an even layer of onion rings and a light dusting of garlic powder. The setup should look organized, ensuring that every piece of meat has direct contact with the base of the insert so that the heat distribution remains consistent throughout the entire cooking duration.

Adding the Sauce

  1. Add the creamy sauce
Spoon the Dijon cream of chicken soup over the onions and patties, spreading it slightly to cover the top of the ingredients.
Look for Sauce covers the ingredients
Tip Use a silicone spatula to get every bit of the soup out of the bowl.

The Dijon cream soup is spread over the top of the onions and patties, creating a blanket that will slowly melt down into the meat. Check that the soup is distributed evenly across the surface to prevent hot spots. The slow cooker is now ready to be covered and switched to the low heat setting for the long, slow braise.

Slow Cooking

  1. Slow cook and serve
Cover and cook on low for 4 hours until the turkey patties reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Let the meat rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Look for Internal temperature reaches 165°F
Safe temperature 165°F (74°C) internal temperature (poultry)
Tip Check the temperature at the thickest part of the patty.

At the end of the cooking phase, the kitchen will be filled with a savory aroma. The sauce should appear thick and creamy, and the onions should have softened significantly.

Check that the turkey is cooked through and reaches the safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) before turning off the device and letting the dish rest briefly before serving.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is overcrowding the slow cooker, which can prevent the sauce from coating the patties evenly. Ensure the patties are spread out so they can cook uniformly.

Another error is checking the slow cooker too frequently; every time the lid is lifted, heat and moisture escape, which extends the cooking time and can affect the final texture of the sauce. Trust the slow cooking process and avoid frequent peeking.

How to tell it’s done

The turkey burger steaks are considered done when they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) when measured with a food thermometer. At this stage, the patties will be opaque throughout and firm to the touch, while the sauce will be smooth, thick, and steaming.

The onions should be completely tender and translucent, having absorbed the savory juices from the meat and the creamy notes of the soup base.

  • Poultry: 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part
