Tips for success
For the most consistent results, try to select potatoes that are uniform in shape and size. If the potato is too irregular, the spiral cutter may struggle to create a continuous ribbon, leading to broken pieces that are difficult to fry.
If the potato is particularly large, you may need to adjust the frying time slightly to ensure the center is fully cooked.
If you do not have a dedicated spiral potato cutter, you can achieve a similar effect by using a sharp paring knife to carefully cut a spiral pattern by hand.
While this requires more patience and precision, it is a great way to practice knife skills and achieve the same iconic look without needing specialized kitchen equipment.
Variations
- Garlic Parmesan Twist: Replace the honey-butter seasoning with a mixture of finely grated parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and dried parsley for a savory, herb-forward flavor profile.
- Sweet Chili Glaze: Drizzle the finished potato with a store-bought sweet chili sauce instead of sriracha mayo for a tangier, slightly sweeter finish that complements the crispy potato.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container for up to 24 hours, though texture will be compromised.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a preheated oven or air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 5-8 minutes until hot and crisp.
These potatoes are best enjoyed immediately after frying to experience the maximum crunch. If you must store them, place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one day. However, note that they will lose their signature crispness upon cooling and will require reheating to regain any of their original texture.
You can prepare the spiral-cut potatoes in advance by keeping them submerged in cold water to prevent oxidation. When ready to cook, pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels before dipping into the batter. Do not batter the potatoes ahead of time, as the moisture from the potato will cause the batter to lose its crispness.
Serving ideas
Serve the tornado potato immediately while it is hot and at its peak crispness. It is best enjoyed as a handheld snack, making it a perfect addition to casual gatherings or movie nights.
The combination of the sweet honey-butter seasoning and the spicy sriracha mayo offers a complex flavor profile that appeals to a wide variety of palates.
For a more substantial presentation, serve the tornado potato alongside other street-food-inspired appetizers. Providing extra sriracha mayo on the side allows guests to customize their spice level.
Because of its unique shape, it serves as an excellent conversation piece and is sure to be the highlight of any appetizer spread or snack menu.

Crispy Tornado Spiral Street Potatoes

Ingredients
- 250 g Russet potato
- 1 35cm bamboo stick
- 30 g cornstarch-tempura batter
- 1 quart vegetable oil, for frying
- 15 g honey-butter cheddar seasoning
- 1 tbsp spicy sriracha mayo
Instructions
- Secure the Russet potato onto a 35cm bamboo stick. Use a manual spiral potato cutter to rotate the blade from the top to the bottom, creating a continuous thin ribbon. Carefully fan the potato ribbon out along the length of the skewer to ensure even cooking.
- Dip the spiral-cut potato into the prepared cornstarch-tempura batter, ensuring all surfaces are lightly coated. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or pot to 365°F (185°C). Carefully lower the potato into the hot oil and fry for 4 minutes, or until the exterior is rigid and turns a deep amber-gold color.
- Remove the fried potato from the oil and let it drain briefly on a wire rack. While still hot, sprinkle the honey-butter cheddar seasoning evenly over the entire surface. Finish by drizzling a generous amount of spicy sriracha mayo over the top before serving immediately while hot and crispy.
