Tips for success
For the crispiest chicken, do not skip the flour – it helps the egg adhere and creates a barrier that keeps the crust crunchy. Let the breaded tenders rest for 5 minutes before frying; this helps the coating set.
Use a candy thermometer to maintain the oil temperature – too hot and the outside burns, too cool and the chicken absorbs oil. Fry in small batches to keep the temperature steady. After frying, drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
When making the glaze, keep the heat at medium and stir frequently. The honey can burn quickly once it starts bubbling. If the glaze becomes too thick, add a teaspoon of water to loosen it.
Toss the chicken in the glaze just before serving to keep the crust as crisp as possible. For the loaded fries, use hot fries so the cheese melts quickly. If you have extra glaze, drizzle it over the whole platter before serving.
Variations
- Spicy Sriracha Honey: Add 1–2 tablespoons of sriracha to the glaze along with the honey and soy sauce. This adds a fiery kick that pairs well with the sweet honey. Adjust the chili flakes to taste.
- Lemon Garlic: Replace the honey with 3 tablespoons of maple syrup and add the zest and juice of half a lemon to the glaze. This gives a bright, citrusy twist that cuts through the richness.
- Crispy Tofu Version: For a vegetarian option, use extra-firm tofu cut into strips instead of chicken. Press and dry the tofu well, then coat in the same breading and fry until golden. The glaze works perfectly.
- Smoky BBQ Glaze: Swap the soy sauce for 2 tablespoons of BBQ sauce and add 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika to the glaze. This gives a smoky, tangy flavor that complements the bacon and cheddar.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Separate chicken and fries for best results.
- Freezer
- Cooked chicken tenders can be frozen in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transferred to a freezer bag for up to 2 months.
- Reheat
- Reheat frozen or refrigerated tenders in a 375°F (190°C) oven for 8–10 minutes, until hot and crispy. Fries are best reheated in the oven or air fryer.
Leftover chicken and fries can be stored separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The chicken will lose its crispness but will still be flavorful.
Reheat in a 375°F (190°C) oven for 5–7 minutes to restore some crunch. The fries can be reheated in the oven as well. Avoid microwaving, as it will make everything soggy. The glaze can be stored in a jar and reheated gently on the stove.
The chicken can be breaded up to 4 hours in advance and kept in the refrigerator. The glaze can be made a day ahead and reheated. The fries can be cooked and kept warm in a low oven. Assemble the dish just before serving to maintain crispness. If making ahead for a party, keep the components separate and combine at the last minute.
Serving ideas
Serve this dish as a main course with a simple green salad or coleslaw to balance the richness. It also works as a party appetizer – cut the tenders into bite-size pieces and serve on a platter with toothpicks.
The loaded fries can be served on the side or underneath the chicken. For a casual dinner, let everyone build their own plate from the platter.
This recipe is best enjoyed immediately after assembling, while the chicken is still crunchy and the cheese is melted. If serving a crowd, keep the components warm and assemble in batches. The honey garlic glaze is sticky, so have plenty of napkins on hand. Pair with a cold beer or a crisp white wine like Sauvignon Blanc to cut through the sweetness.

Crispy Honey Garlic Butter Chicken Tenders with Loaded Bacon Fries

Ingredients
- 500 g chicken breast tenders
- 80 g all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 100 g panko breadcrumbs
- 50 g unsalted butter
- 4 tbsp honey
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp red chili flakes
- 400 g crispy french fries
- 4 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
- 100 g shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls: one with the flour, one with the beaten eggs, and one with the panko breadcrumbs. Season the flour lightly with salt and pepper. Pat the chicken tenders dry with paper towels. Dredge each tender in the flour, shaking off any excess, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat thoroughly with the panko, pressing gently to adhere. Place the breaded tenders on a plate while breading the rest.
- Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a large, deep skillet. Heat over medium-high until the oil reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a candy thermometer to check the temperature. If the oil is too hot, the coating will burn before the chicken cooks through; if too cool, the tenders will absorb oil and turn greasy.
- Carefully place a few breaded tenders into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 5 minutes, turning occasionally, until deep golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature of the thickest tender should reach 165°F (74°C). Transfer the fried tenders to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant, stirring constantly. Pour in the honey, soy sauce, and chili flakes. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it bubble for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens into a sticky glaze that coats the back of a spoon.
- Add the fried chicken tenders to the skillet with the glaze. Toss gently with tongs until every tender is fully coated and the glaze clings to the crispy crust. Keep the heat low so the glaze does not burn. Set aside while assembling the fries.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the hot french fries on a baking sheet or serving platter. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar evenly over the fries, then scatter the crumbled bacon on top. Place the baking sheet in the oven for 3–5 minutes, just until the cheese melts.
- Pile the glazed chicken tenders on top of the loaded fries. Drizzle any remaining glaze from the skillet over the chicken and fries. Finish with a shower of chopped green onions for color and freshness. Serve immediately while everything is hot and crisp.
- Bring the platter to the table and let everyone dig in. The combination of sweet honey, savory soy, and garlicky butter over crunchy chicken and cheesy fries is best enjoyed right away. Provide extra napkins – this dish is sticky and delicious.
