Tips for success
For the crispiest chicken, dice the cutlets just before assembling and avoid stirring them into the pasta. Keeping them on top of the casserole allows the coating to stay crunchy during baking.
If you prefer extra heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the marinara sauce or sprinkle them over the top before baking.
To make the garlic-butter panko, toss fresh panko breadcrumbs with melted butter and a clove of minced garlic, then toast lightly in a skillet until golden. This adds a deep, savory flavor and ensures even browning. Alternatively, use store-bought garlic-butter panko for a shortcut.
Variations
- Spicy Sausage Version: Swap the chicken for cooked Italian sausage, sliced into rounds. Brown the sausage in a skillet before adding to the casserole. The spicy, fennel-scented sausage pairs beautifully with the creamy marinara.
- Vegetarian Mushroom Parm: Replace the chicken with thick slices of portobello mushrooms, breaded and pan-fried until crispy. Use a vegetarian-friendly marinara and omit the chicken for a hearty meatless dinner.
- Extra Cheesy Four-Cheese: Mix 1/2 cup each of shredded provolone and grated Parmesan into the ricotta mixture. Top with the mozzarella and panko as directed for an even more decadent, cheesy casserole.
- BBQ Chicken Twist: Toss the diced chicken cutlets with 1/4 cup barbecue sauce before layering on top. Replace the marinara with a smoky barbecue sauce in the pasta mixture for a tangy, Southern-inspired variation.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven until hot and bubbly.
- Freezer
- Freeze the unbaked casserole in a freezer-safe dish for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before baking. Add 10-15 minutes to the baking time.
- Reheat
- Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 10-15 minutes until heated through.
Leftover casserole can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or in a 350°F (175°C) oven until heated through. The crispy topping may soften upon reheating, but the flavors will remain delicious.
Assemble the casserole up to 24 hours in advance, but do not bake. Cover tightly with foil and refrigerate.
When ready to bake, remove from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes while the oven preheats. Bake as directed, adding 5-10 minutes to the cooking time if starting from cold.
Serving ideas
Serve this casserole hot, straight from the oven, with a generous scattering of fresh basil leaves. The basil adds a fresh, aromatic contrast to the rich, cheesy pasta.
Pair with a simple green salad dressed with lemon vinaigrette to balance the richness, and crusty garlic bread for sopping up any extra sauce.
This casserole is a complete meal on its own, but it also works well as a side dish for a larger Italian-American spread.
Portion it into squares for a casual dinner, or scoop it into bowls for a cozier presentation. Leftovers make excellent next-day lunches, though the crispy topping is best enjoyed fresh.

Crispy Chicken Parm Baked Ziti Casserole

Ingredients
- 450 g crispy panko-breaded chicken cutlets (about 1 lb)
- 400 g ziti pasta (about 14 oz)
- 600 ml marinara sauce (about 2 1/2 cups)
- 120 ml heavy cream (about 1/2 cup)
- 200 g ricotta cheese (about 3/4 cup)
- 250 g shredded mozzarella cheese (about 2 1/2 cups)
- 1/2 cup garlic-butter panko crumbs
- Fresh basil leaves, for serving
Instructions
- Cook the ziti in a large pot of salted boiling water until just shy of al dente, about 2 minutes less than the package directs. Drain well and return to the pot. Stir in the marinara sauce, heavy cream, and ricotta cheese until the pasta is evenly coated and the sauce is creamy.
- While the pasta cooks, dice the crispy panko-breaded chicken cutlets into bite-size pieces, about 1/2-inch cubes. Set them aside. Keep the pieces relatively large so they stay crunchy and visible in the finished casserole.
- Transfer the creamy ziti mixture to a 9x13-inch baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Scatter the diced chicken cutlets evenly over the top of the pasta, pressing them down gently so they nestle into the sauce.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the chicken and pasta. Then scatter the garlic-butter panko crumbs over the mozzarella, covering the surface in a light, even layer.
- Bake the casserole in a preheated 400°F (205°C) oven for 18 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the panko is deep golden brown. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil.
- Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Scatter fresh basil leaves over the top just before serving. Scoop out generous portions, making sure each serving includes some crispy chicken from the top layer.
