Tips for success
To take this dish to the next level, try adding a pinch of dried Italian seasoning or black pepper directly into the grated parmesan cheese before coating the chicken.
If you prefer a bit of heat, a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes stirred into the creamy sauce before baking adds a wonderful, subtle warmth that cuts through the richness of the cheese.
Always let the chicken rest for about five minutes after removing it from the oven. This brief resting period allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, ensuring every bite is tender, and it gives the bubbling creamy sauce a chance to settle and thicken slightly, making it easier to spoon over your side dishes.
Variations
- Spicy Creamy Parmesan Chicken: Stir half a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes into the creamy sauce before baking for a subtle kick.
- Herb-Crusted Parmesan Chicken: Mix a teaspoon of dried Italian seasoning or chopped fresh rosemary into the parmesan coating for an earthy herbal aroma.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended as the creamy sauce may separate.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven covered with foil for 15 minutes until hot.
Store any leftover cooked chicken and creamy sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking. Kept properly, the leftovers will remain delicious for up to three days.
Note that the cheese crust will lose its initial crispiness in the fridge, but the flavors will continue to meld and taste fantastic when reheated.
You can spread the creamy sauce in the baking dish and coat the chicken breasts in the parmesan cheese up to four hours in advance. Keep the coated chicken on a plate covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator, and store the baking dish with the sauce separately in the fridge. Assemble them together just before baking.
Serving ideas
This rich and savory chicken pairs beautifully with a variety of simple side dishes that can soak up the delicious creamy sauce.
Serve it over a bed of al dente fettuccine, angel hair pasta, or creamy mashed potatoes. For a lighter option, zucchini noodles or steamed cauliflower rice work wonderfully to balance the decadence of the dish.
To balance the rich, cheesy flavors of the main course, round out the meal with a crisp, bright green salad dressed in a simple lemon vinaigrette.
Steamed green beans, roasted asparagus, or broccoli florets also provide a colorful, fresh contrast that cuts through the creamy sauce, making for a beautiful dinner presentation.

Crispy Baked Parmesan Chicken with Creamy Sauce

Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 1/2 cups creamy sauce, store-bought or made ahead
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
Instructions
- Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels. In a shallow dish, combine the grated parmesan cheese. Press each chicken breast firmly into the parmesan cheese to coat evenly on all sides, creating a simple cheese crust.
- Pour the creamy sauce into the bottom of a white oval baking dish, spreading it into an even layer. Place the parmesan-coated chicken breasts directly on top of the sauce, leaving a small space between each piece.
- Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) and bake for 20 minutes until the creamy sauce is bubbling vigorously around the edges and the chicken begins to cook through.
- Remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the chicken breasts. Return to the oven under the broiler for 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden-brown, and the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Sprinkle the finely chopped fresh parsley over the top of the bubbling cheese before serving hot directly from the dish.
