Tips for success

To achieve a beautiful golden-brown top, consider sprinkling a small amount of panko breadcrumbs or extra grated cheese over the shrimp during the last five minutes of baking.

This adds a delightful textural contrast to the creamy sauce. If the shrimp seem to be browning too quickly, you can loosely tent the foil pan with aluminum foil to protect them while the center finishes heating through.

For a deeper flavor profile, stir a teaspoon of Dijon mustard or a dash of hot sauce into the cheese sauce before folding in the pasta.

These additions provide a subtle acidity that cuts through the richness of the cheese, balancing the dish perfectly. Always taste the sauce before adding salt, as different cheeses and store-bought sauces vary greatly in their sodium content.

Variations

  • Spicy Cajun Shrimp Mac: Replace the seafood seasoning with a bold Cajun spice blend. Add sautéed bell peppers and onions to the pasta mixture before baking for an extra layer of flavor and crunch.
  • Garlic Butter Shrimp Mac: Toss the raw shrimp in a mixture of melted butter, minced garlic, and fresh parsley before placing them on top. This creates a rich, aromatic garlic-butter finish.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer
Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
Reheat
Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through, or microwave individual portions on medium power until hot.

Allow any leftovers to cool to room temperature for no more than 2 hours before storing. Place the mac and cheese in an airtight container to keep it from drying out.

Properly stored, it will maintain its quality for up to three days in the refrigerator. Ensure the container is sealed tightly to prevent the pasta from absorbing any refrigerator odors.

You can assemble the dish up to 24 hours in advance, but keep the shrimp separate until you are ready to bake. Store the sauce-coated pasta in the refrigerator and add the seasoned shrimp just before placing the pan in the oven. If baking from cold, increase the cook time by 5 to 10 minutes to ensure the center reaches the required temperature.

Serving ideas

Serve this dish directly from the baking pan for a casual, comforting presentation. It pairs exceptionally well with a crisp, acidic side salad to balance the richness of the cheese sauce.

A squeeze of fresh lemon juice over the finished shrimp just before serving can brighten the flavors, adding a necessary zing that complements the seafood beautifully.

When plating, use a large spoon to ensure each serving includes a generous portion of the cheesy pasta and several shrimp. If desired, garnish with finely chopped fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color and freshness. This dish is best enjoyed while hot, when the cheese is at its most elastic and the shrimp are at their most tender.

Frequently asked questions

Can this be made ahead of time?
Yes, assemble the pasta and sauce in the baking dish and refrigerate it. Add the seasoned shrimp just before baking. If cooking from cold, you may need to extend the baking time by about 10 minutes to ensure the dish is heated through.
What is the best way to reheat leftovers?
The best way to reheat is in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until thoroughly warmed. Covering the dish with foil helps prevent the pasta from drying out. Alternatively, microwave individual portions on medium power, stirring halfway through to ensure even heating.
Can other types of seafood be used?
Certainly. Scallops, chunks of lobster meat, or even crab meat work beautifully in this recipe. Ensure any delicate seafood is added appropriately so it does not overcook during the baking process, keeping the internal temperature at 145°F (63°C).

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pasta
  • 3 cups cheese sauce, store-bought or made ahead
  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tbsp seafood seasoning

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until al dente according to package instructions. Drain the pasta thoroughly using a colander and return it to the pot or a large mixing bowl.
  2. Pour the cheese sauce over the cooked pasta and mix until every noodle is evenly coated. Toss the raw shrimp with the seafood seasoning in a separate bowl to ensure they are well coated. Transfer the coated pasta mixture into a foil pan, spreading it out into an even layer.
  3. Arrange the seasoned shrimp on top of the pasta mixture. Place the foil pan in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 20 minutes, or until the shrimp are opaque and reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
