Tips for success
To add an extra layer of flavor, consider sautéing the garlic in a separate pan with the butter before adding it to the slow cooker.
While this adds a step, it deepens the garlic notes and creates a more robust base for the sauce. However, for the most efficient dump-and-go experience, adding the raw garlic as directed works perfectly well.
If you prefer a lighter dish, you can substitute the heavy cream with full-fat Greek yogurt, stirred in at the very end.
This adds a pleasant tang that complements the lemon while keeping the sauce thick and creamy. Just be sure to remove the slow cooker from the heat source before adding the yogurt to prevent it from separating.
Variations
- Spinach and Mushroom: Replace the asparagus with 3 cups of fresh baby spinach and 1 cup of sliced mushrooms. Add the mushrooms at the start, and fold in the spinach at the end along with the cream and parmesan.
- Sun-Dried Tomato: Add 1/2 cup of chopped sun-dried tomatoes during the initial assembly for a deeper, tangy flavor profile that pairs exceptionally well with the lemon and garlic butter.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Cool leftovers completely within 2 hours, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended as the cream-based sauce and orzo texture do not hold up well during the thawing and reheating process.
- Reheat
- Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of chicken broth to loosen the sauce until heated through.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Because pasta continues to absorb liquid as it sits, the dish may become thicker over time.
When storing, try to keep the container sealed tight to maintain the freshness of the lemon and herb aromatics, which can fade if exposed to air for too long.
This dish is best enjoyed fresh, but you can prepare the ingredients in advance by dicing the chicken and chopping the asparagus. Store them in separate containers in the refrigerator.
When you are ready to cook, simply dump the prepped ingredients into the slow cooker, add the liquids and pasta, and proceed with the cooking instructions as written.
Serving ideas
Serve this meal in wide, shallow bowls to showcase the creamy texture of the orzo and the vibrant colors of the asparagus. A side of crusty sourdough bread is an excellent accompaniment for soaking up the remaining lemon-butter sauce left at the bottom of the bowl.
Top each serving with an extra sprinkle of freshly grated parmesan and a few extra sprigs of dill for a professional presentation. If you want an extra pop of flavor, a light squeeze of fresh lemon juice over the top just before eating can brighten the entire dish and cut through the richness of the cream.

Creamy One-Pot Lemon Garlic Butter Chicken and Orzo

Ingredients
- 1.5 lb chicken breast, diced
- 2 cups uncooked orzo pasta
- 4 cups chicken bone broth
- 2 fresh lemons, zested and juiced
- 4 tbsp butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups chopped asparagus spears
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
- Fresh dill, for serving
Instructions
- Place the diced chicken breast, uncooked orzo, chicken bone broth, lemon zest, lemon juice, butter, and minced garlic into the ceramic insert of the slow cooker. Ensure all ingredients are well combined and the orzo is mostly submerged in the liquid to ensure even cooking.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid and set it to cook on HIGH for 90 minutes. The orzo should absorb most of the liquid and become tender while the chicken cooks through to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Remove the lid and fold in the chopped asparagus, heavy cream, and grated parmesan cheese. Continue to cook for another few minutes until the asparagus is tender-crisp and the sauce reaches a creamy, velvety consistency. Serve immediately garnished with fresh dill and lemon wheels.
