Tips for success
For the most flavorful sauce, use a microplane to zest the lemon directly over the skillet so the oils release into the warm cream. This simple step brightens the entire dish. When adding the parmesan, do it off the heat or at a gentle simmer—high heat can make it clump. If you prefer a thinner sauce, add extra pasta water; for a thicker coating, let it simmer a minute longer.
This recipe is endlessly adaptable. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for heat, or toss in some sautéed mushrooms or peas for extra substance. For a protein boost, top with grilled chicken or shrimp.
The sauce also works beautifully with roasted vegetables. To keep leftovers creamy, reheat gently with a splash of milk or pasta water—avoid the microwave on full power, which can cause the sauce to separate.
Variations
- Add Protein: Top the finished spaghetti with grilled chicken, seared shrimp, or crispy pancetta. The creamy lemon sauce pairs well with any of these, adding extra substance and flavor.
- Vegetable Boost: Sauté asparagus, peas, or spinach in the skillet before adding the cream. These vegetables bring color and a fresh bite, making the dish more substantial.
- Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes along with the garlic for a gentle heat. The spice complements the lemon and cream without overwhelming them.
- Herb Swap: Replace parsley with fresh basil, chives, or dill. Each herb brings a different character—basil adds sweetness, chives a mild onion note, and dill a fresh tang.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently with a splash of milk or pasta water to restore creaminess.
- Freezer
- Not recommended—cream sauces can separate when frozen and thawed, altering the texture.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a skillet over low heat, stirring in a splash of milk or pasta water until warmed through. Avoid boiling.
Store leftover creamy lemon garlic spaghetti in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools; when reheating, add a splash of milk or reserved pasta water to restore its silky texture. Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, stirring often, until warmed through. Avoid overheating, which can cause the cream to curdle.
You can prep the aromatics and lemon zest up to a day ahead and store them in the refrigerator. The sauce is best made fresh, but you can cook the pasta earlier, toss it with a little olive oil, and refrigerate it for up to 2 days.
When ready to serve, reheat the pasta in boiling water for 30 seconds, then proceed with the sauce. The finished dish is not ideal for long-term storage, so enjoy it within a day or two.
Serving ideas
Serve this creamy lemon garlic spaghetti immediately after cooking, while the sauce is glossy and warm. Divide among wide, shallow bowls and finish with an extra shower of parmesan and a crack of black pepper.
A side of crusty bread or a simple green salad with a vinaigrette balances the richness. For a touch of elegance, garnish with a few whole parsley leaves or a twist of lemon zest.
This pasta pairs beautifully with a crisp white wine like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, which echoes the lemon notes. For a non-alcoholic option, try sparkling water with lemon.
The dish stands well on its own, but you can also serve it alongside grilled chicken or seared shrimp for a heartier meal. It's a versatile dinner that works for family weeknights or casual entertaining.

Creamy Lemon Garlic Spaghetti Ready in 12 Minutes

Ingredients
- 12 oz spaghetti
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup finely diced yellow onion
- 3 cloves minced garlic
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp grated lemon zest
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup reserved pasta water
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 1/2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package directions until just shy of al dente, about 1 minute less than the recommended time. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water before draining. Drain the spaghetti and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the finely diced yellow onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour the heavy cream into the skillet with the onions and garlic. Add the fresh lemon juice, lemon zest, kosher salt, and grated parmesan cheese. Stir constantly as the sauce simmers gently until the cheese melts and the sauce thickens slightly, about 2 minutes.
- Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the cream sauce. Toss everything together with tongs or a wooden spoon, adding reserved pasta water a splash at a time until the sauce clings to every noodle and reaches a silky consistency.
- Remove the skillet from the heat. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley and freshly cracked black pepper. Toss once more, then divide among warm bowls. Serve immediately with extra parmesan on the side if desired.
