Tips for success
To maximize the texture of the bread pieces, toast them in the oven on the same baking sheet as the bread bowl for the last five minutes of baking. This ensures they are crispy and perfect for scooping up the creamy shrimp filling.
You can also brush the exterior of the bread bowl with a little melted garlic butter before baking for an extra layer of flavor and a beautiful, shiny finish.
If you find the sauce is becoming too thick while simmering, simply add a splash of cream or even a tiny bit of white wine to loosen it up. This also adds a nice acidity that cuts through the richness of the cheese. Always taste the sauce before filling the bread to ensure it has enough salt, as the bread itself can be quite neutral and requires a well-seasoned filling.
Variations
- Spicy Cajun Shrimp: Add one tablespoon of Cajun seasoning to the butter when sautéing the shrimp to provide a smoky, spicy kick that pairs perfectly with the creamy cheese sauce.
- Spinach and Artichoke: Fold in a half-cup of chopped, well-drained spinach and canned artichoke hearts during the final stage of sauce preparation for a classic, veggie-packed flavor profile.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store the shrimp and cheese filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended as the cream-based sauce may separate and the bread texture will suffer.
- Reheat
- Reheat the shrimp and cheese filling in a skillet over low heat until warm, then serve with fresh or toasted bread.
If you have leftovers, allow the bread bowl to cool for no more than two hours before transferring the contents to an airtight container.
The filling can be stored in the refrigerator, but it is best to remove it from the bread bowl first to prevent the bread from becoming excessively soggy. The bread bowl itself can be wrapped in foil and kept at room temperature for a day or two.
You can prepare the shrimp and cheese sauce in advance and keep it in the refrigerator for up to one day. When you are ready to serve, hollow out your fresh bread bowl and fill it with the cold mixture. Increase the baking time by about five to ten minutes to ensure the center is heated through completely, or gently reheat the filling in a skillet before adding it to the bread.
Serving ideas
Serve this dish immediately while the cheese is still molten and the bread is warm. Place the bread bowl on a large serving platter and surround it with the toasted bread chunks and the bread lid.
This allows guests to easily tear off pieces of the crust or use the chunks to scoop out the shrimp and sauce. Provide small plates and napkins for everyone, as this is a hands-on, indulgent meal.
Consider serving a light, crisp side salad with a bright vinaigrette alongside the bread bowl. The acidity of the salad helps balance the richness of the creamy shrimp and melted cheese, making for a more well-rounded dining experience.
If serving as an appetizer, ensure you have plenty of small forks or spoons available, as the shrimp can be difficult to manage with just the bread pieces alone.

Creamy Garlic Shrimp Stuffed Sourdough Bread Bowl

Ingredients
- 1 large round sourdough loaf
- 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup cheese sauce base
- fresh parsley, chopped, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Using a serrated knife, cut a large circle out of the top of the sourdough loaf and set the lid aside. Carefully hollow out the center of the bread, leaving about an inch of wall thickness. Keep the bread chunks for dipping later.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about thirty seconds. Add the shrimp and sear until they turn opaque and pink. Once the shrimp are cooked through to 145°F (63°C), stir in the cheese sauce base and half of the mozzarella cheese. Stir constantly until the cheese melts and the sauce thickens slightly.
- Transfer the shrimp and cheese mixture into the prepared hollowed-out bread bowl. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese. Place the bread bowl on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with fresh parsley, and serve immediately with the bread lid and extra bread chunks.
