Tips for success
For the best flavor, use a high-quality roasted garlic Parmesan cream sauce. If making your own, roast a head of garlic until soft, then blend with heavy cream, Parmesan, and a pinch of nutmeg. The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. If it's too thin, simmer it on the stove to reduce before adding to the slow cooker.
To prevent the pasta from becoming mushy, cook on low and check for doneness a few minutes before the recommended time. If you prefer a firmer pasta, reduce the cooking time by 15 minutes.
Also, be sure to stir gently to avoid breaking the pasta. For a crispy top, transfer the finished dish to a baking dish, sprinkle with extra mozzarella, and broil for 2-3 minutes.
Variations
- Spicy Version: Use hot Italian sausage instead of sweet, and add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the sauce for a spicy kick. You can also use a spicy marinara sauce instead of the garlic cream sauce for a different flavor profile.
- Vegetarian: Omit the sausage and add sliced mushrooms and spinach. Sauté the mushrooms with garlic before adding to the slow cooker. Use a vegetarian cream sauce and add extra mozzarella for richness.
- Chicken Version: Substitute the sausage with cooked, shredded chicken. Use a garlic Alfredo sauce and add sun-dried tomatoes for a tangy twist. Cook on low for 2-3 hours, just until the pasta is tender.
- Baked Pasta: After slow cooking, transfer the mixture to a baking dish, top with extra mozzarella and Parmesan, and broil for 2-3 minutes until bubbly and golden. This adds a crispy, cheesy crust.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Add a splash of milk when reheating to restore creaminess.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended as the creamy sauce may separate and pasta can become mushy upon thawing.
- Reheat
- Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of milk or cream. Stir often until heated through.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The pasta will absorb some sauce as it sits, so add a splash of milk or cream when reheating to restore the creamy texture.
Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Do not freeze, as the creamy sauce may separate and the pasta can become mushy.
Brown the sausage and prepare the garlic cream sauce up to 2 days in advance. Store them separately in the refrigerator. When ready to cook, assemble the layers in the slow cooker and cook on low.
You can also assemble the entire dish (without cooking) in the slow cooker insert, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add 30 minutes to the cooking time if starting from cold.
Serving ideas
Serve the cavatappi hot, straight from the slow cooker, or plate it on a white dish for a beautiful presentation. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil if desired, though the video does not show this.
Pair with a simple green salad and crusty bread to soak up the creamy sauce. This dish is hearty enough to serve on its own, but it also pairs well with roasted vegetables.
For a complete meal, add a side of garlic bread or a crisp Caesar salad. The creamy pasta is rich, so lighter sides balance it well. Leftovers make a great lunch the next day—just reheat gently. This recipe is perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or any time you need a comforting, satisfying meal with minimal effort.

Creamy Crockpot Mozzarella Sausage Cavatappi

Ingredients
- 1 lb sweet Italian pork sausage, browned and crumbled
- 1 lb cavatappi pasta
- 2 cups roasted garlic Parmesan cream sauce
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 cups shredded whole-milk mozzarella
Instructions
- Place the browned Italian sausage crumbles evenly in the bottom of the slow cooker. Spread the cavatappi pasta over the sausage, then pour the roasted garlic Parmesan cream sauce over the pasta. Stir gently to coat the pasta with the sauce.
- Place the block of cream cheese in the center of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella over the top, covering the cream cheese and pasta as much as possible.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 3 hours, or until the pasta is tender and the sauce is bubbling. Stir gently halfway through cooking to incorporate the melted cheeses.
- Stir the pasta mixture thoroughly to combine all the ingredients. Check that the pasta is cooked al dente and the sausage is heated through. If needed, cook for an additional 30 minutes.
- Spoon the creamy cavatappi onto plates or into bowls. Serve hot, with extra mozzarella or Parmesan on the side if desired.
