Tips for success
For the best texture, use a high-quality Alfredo sauce with real Parmesan and garlic. If you prefer a lighter sauce, you can substitute half of the Alfredo with chicken broth.
To make the dish spicier, use hot smoked kielbasa or add a pinch of red pepper flakes. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free penne and ensure the Alfredo sauce is gluten-free.
When reheating leftovers, add a splash of milk or chicken broth to loosen the sauce, as it thickens when chilled. The pasta will continue to absorb liquid, so a little extra moisture helps restore the creamy texture.
If you have extra cheese, sprinkle some on top before reheating. This dish also freezes well; see the storage notes below for details.
Variations
- Chicken Alfredo: Replace the kielbasa with 1 1/2 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces. Cook on low for 4 hours or until the chicken reaches 165°F. The chicken will be tender and juicy.
- Spicy Sausage: Use hot Italian sausage or andouille instead of kielbasa for a spicy kick. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes along with the Alfredo sauce to amplify the heat.
- Vegetarian: Omit the meat and add an extra 2 cups of broccoli and a can of drained chickpeas for protein. The chickpeas will absorb the sauce and add a nice texture.
- Extra Cheesy: Add 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese along with the mozzarella, and sprinkle additional mozzarella on top during the last 15 minutes of cooking for a golden, bubbly crust.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Add a splash of milk when reheating to restore creaminess.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a little milk or broth to loosen the sauce. Stir frequently until hot.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools, so add a splash of milk or broth when reheating.
Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until heated through. Do not leave the dish at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
This recipe is ideal for meal prep. Assemble all the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate.
In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on low as directed, adding about 30 minutes to the cooking time to account for the cold start. Alternatively, you can fully cook the dish and refrigerate it for up to 2 days before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve this kielbasa Alfredo penne straight from the slow cooker for a casual family dinner. It pairs well with a simple green salad and crusty garlic bread to soak up the extra sauce. For a more elegant presentation, spoon the pasta onto a large platter and garnish with fresh parsley and extra Parmesan shavings.
This dish is hearty enough to be a complete meal on its own, but it also works well as a side for grilled chicken or steak. For a lighter option, serve it with roasted vegetables or a crisp cucumber salad. The creamy, smoky flavors are comforting on their own, so keep the accompaniments simple to let the pasta shine.
