Tips for success
To enhance the depth of flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the baking dish before roasting if a slight heat is desired. This adds a subtle kick that complements the creaminess of the feta perfectly. Additionally, be sure to use a high-quality flaky sea salt, as it provides small bursts of salinity that elevate the sweetness of the roasted cherry tomatoes.
If you prefer a more intense garlic flavor, you can gently crush the garlic cloves with the back of a knife before placing them in the baking dish. This releases more of their aromatic oils during the roasting process.
When garnishing, use plenty of fresh basil; the herbal notes provide a bright contrast to the rich, salty cheese, making every bite feel fresh and well-balanced.
Variations
- Spinach and Feta: Stir in two large handfuls of fresh baby spinach immediately after smashing the feta. The residual heat from the sauce will wilt the spinach perfectly, adding a touch of color and extra nutrients to your pasta.
- Sun-Dried Tomato Twist: Replace half of the cherry tomatoes with sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil. This variation adds a deeper, more concentrated sweetness and a chewier texture that pairs wonderfully with the tangy sheep's milk feta.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove with a splash of water to loosen the sauce.
- Freezer
- Freezing is not recommended as the texture of the feta sauce will likely separate and become grainy upon thawing.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a pan over low heat, adding a tablespoon of water or broth to help return the sauce to its creamy consistency.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness. The sauce may thicken significantly as it cools due to the nature of the feta cheese. Ensure the dish is completely cooled to room temperature before covering and refrigerating, but do not leave it out on the counter for longer than two hours for safety reasons.
While this dish is best enjoyed immediately for the ideal texture, the components can be prepared in advance. You can wash and prepare the tomatoes and garlic, and keep the feta block ready.
However, it is highly recommended to roast the vegetables and cook the pasta fresh just before serving to ensure the sauce remains creamy and the pasta maintains its perfect al dente texture.
Serving ideas
Serve this dish immediately in shallow bowls to showcase the beautiful colors of the blistered tomatoes and fresh basil. A side of crusty bread is the perfect accompaniment to mop up any remaining sauce left in the bowl.
The warmth of the pasta combined with the creamy feta creates an inviting and comforting atmosphere, making it a perfect centerpiece for a casual family dinner.
For a more complete meal, consider serving this pasta alongside a crisp green salad with a simple vinaigrette. The freshness of the salad greens provides a nice textural contrast to the soft, creamy pasta.
Ensure that additional cracked black pepper and fresh basil are available at the table so that guests can customize the final flavor profile according to their personal preference.

Creamy Baked Feta Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes

Ingredients
- 500 grams cherry tomatoes
- 200 grams feta block
- 120 milliliters extra-virgin olive oil
- 4 whole garlic cloves
- 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt
- 400 grams cavatappi pasta
- fresh basil, chiffonade, to taste
- cracked black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the cherry tomatoes in a white stoneware baking dish. Place the block of feta in the center. Add the garlic cloves around the feta. Drizzle the extra-virgin olive oil over everything and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
- Place the baking dish into the preheated oven. Roast for 30 minutes. The tomatoes should be blistered and slightly charred, and the feta should be soft and molten.
- While the vegetables roast, boil the cavatappi in a large pot of salted water until al dente. Drain the pasta. Using a wooden spoon, smash the roasted feta and garlic into the hot oil and tomatoes to create a creamy pink sauce. Toss the cooked cavatappi directly into the sauce until fully coated. Finish with fresh basil and cracked black pepper.
