Tips for success

To achieve the ultimate cheesy pull shown in the video, timing is everything. Serve the casserole about ten minutes after it comes out of the oven.

This brief resting period is crucial because it allows the creamy sauce to cool slightly and thicken up, which keeps the potato and beef layers intact when sliced. If you cut into the casserole immediately, the hot sauce will be too runny, causing the beautiful layers to slide apart on the plate.

If you want to add an extra layer of savory depth to the beef, consider sautéing some finely diced yellow onions and minced garlic directly with the ground beef as it browns. This classic aromatic base enhances the overall flavor profile of the casserole without altering its comforting texture. You can also season the cream sauce with a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to elevate the rich, velvety flavor.

Variations

  • Spicy Jalapeno Cheddar: Add sliced fresh jalapenos between the potato layers and use pepper jack cheese alongside the cheddar for a spicy kick.
  • Bacon and Green Onion: Stir crumbled cooked bacon and chopped green onions into the ground beef mixture before layering for extra smoky flavor.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.
Freezer
Freeze the baked casserole in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
Reheat
Reheat individual portions in the microwave, or cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) until hot.

Allow any leftover casserole to cool completely at room temperature for no more than two hours before storing. Place the leftovers in an airtight container, or cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap, and store it in the refrigerator. The flavors will continue to develop overnight, making the leftovers taste even better the next day. Consume the refrigerated leftovers within three to four days for the best quality and safety.

You can easily assemble this casserole a day in advance to save time. Layer the potatoes, seasoned beef, and cream sauce in the baking dish, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and store it in the refrigerator overnight.

When you are ready to bake, remove the plastic wrap, cover the dish with foil, and bake as directed. You may need to add ten additional minutes to the baking time to account for the cold dish starting from the refrigerator.

Serving ideas

This hearty and rich casserole is a complete meal on its own, but it pairs beautifully with light, crisp side dishes that balance the richness. A simple green salad tossed with a tangy vinaigrette or a lemon-herb dressing is the perfect accompaniment.

The bright acidity of the salad cuts through the creamy potato layers and the savory beef, refreshing your palate between bites. Roasted green vegetables, such as asparagus or broccoli, also make excellent sides.

Serve this comforting dish family-style directly from its elegant white ceramic baking dish to showcase the beautiful golden-brown cheese crust and fresh parsley garnish.

Use a sturdy metal spatula to lift out clean, square portions, revealing the gorgeous, steaming layers of potato and seasoned beef beneath. For a casual gathering, pair this cozy casserole with warm, crusty bread or garlic knots to soak up any extra velvety cream sauce left on the plate.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 tbsp seasoning of choice
  • 4 large potatoes, sliced
  • 2 cups velvety cream sauce, store-bought or made ahead
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and fully cooked through. Stir in the seasoning to flavor the meat. Ensure the meat reaches a safe internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) to guarantee food safety. Drain any excess grease from the skillet and set the seasoned beef aside.
  2. Grease a rectangular ceramic baking dish. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer at the bottom of the dish. Evenly spread the seasoned ground beef over the potatoes, then layer the remaining sliced potatoes on top of the beef.
  3. Pour the velvety cream sauce evenly over the layered potatoes and seasoned beef, ensuring it seeps down into the layers. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 50 to 60 minutes until the potatoes are completely tender when pierced with a fork.
  4. Remove the foil from the baking dish and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Return the casserole to the oven under the broiler for 3 to 4 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted, bubbling fiercely, and turns a beautiful golden-brown color.
  5. Remove the hot casserole from the oven and garnish the top immediately with the chopped fresh parsley. Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving to let the layers set and the steam gently rise.
