Tips for success
For the cleanest slices, use a very sharp chef's knife or a serrated knife to cut through the layers of pasta and cheese. Wipe the knife blade clean with a damp paper towel between each slice to prevent cheese and sauce from smearing across the top of the lasagna.
Using a wide, sturdy metal spatula to lift each piece out of the baking dish will also help keep the beautiful layers perfectly intact as you transfer them to plates.
If you find that the top layer of cheese is browning too quickly before the center of the lasagna is fully heated through, simply tent a piece of aluminum foil loosely over the top of the baking dish.
This protects the cheese from burning while allowing the heat to continue penetrating the dense middle layers. Conversely, if the cheese is not browned enough at the end of the baking time, you can turn on the broiler for one to two minutes, watching very closely to prevent burning.
Variations
- Classic Three-Cheese: Substitute the ricotta cheese with a mixture of cottage cheese, grated parmesan, and mozzarella for a different texture and flavor profile.
- Spicy Beef Lasagna: Add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to the ground beef marinara sauce to give the dish a subtle, warming kick.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, cooling for no more than 2 hours first.
- Freezer
- Freeze individual wrapped slices or the entire assembled dish wrapped tightly in plastic and foil for up to 3 months.
- Reheat
- Reheat individual slices in the microwave for 2 minutes, or cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.
Leftover lasagna can be stored in the refrigerator for up to four days. Allow the lasagna to cool completely at room temperature for no more than two hours before transferring it to an airtight container, or cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
For longer storage, you can freeze individual slices or the entire baked dish, ensuring it is wrapped securely to prevent freezer burn.
Lasagna is an excellent make-ahead meal. You can fully assemble the lasagna, cover it tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil, and store it in the refrigerator for up to twenty-four hours before baking.
When ready to cook, remove the plastic wrap, replace the foil, and bake as directed, adding about ten minutes to the covered baking time to account for the cold temperature of the dish.
Serving ideas
Serve this classic beef lasagna warm, garnished with fresh chopped parsley flakes for a bright pop of color and flavor. It pairs beautifully with a simple, crisp green salad tossed in a light vinaigrained to balance the richness of the cheese and meat. A side of warm garlic bread or crusty Italian bread is also perfect for scooping up any extra savory meat sauce left on the plate.
For a complete Italian-themed dinner, pair the lasagna with roasted vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, or asparagus. The light, charred flavors of the vegetables complement the hearty, savory notes of the pasta. Serve individual slices on warm plates to keep the cheese melt-in-your-mouth soft and gooey throughout the meal, making every bite as comforting as the first.

Classic Cheesy Beef Lasagna

Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 3 cups marinara sauce
- 12 lasagna noodles, cooked
- 15 oz ricotta cheese
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until it is fully browned and no pink remains. Ensure the beef reaches a safe internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) to eliminate any harmful bacteria before proceeding.
- Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet with the browned ground beef. Stir well to combine the ingredients, then reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for about ten minutes to allow the flavors to meld together beautifully.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce at the bottom of a baking dish. Place three cooked lasagna noodles on top, then evenly spread a portion of the creamy ricotta cheese over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce and shredded mozzarella.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining lasagna noodles, creamy ricotta cheese, rich meat sauce, and shredded mozzarella cheese. Ensure you save a generous portion of the mozzarella cheese to cover the very top layer completely, which will create the perfect cheesy crust.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for twenty-five minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional fifteen minutes until the top mozzarella layer is bubbling golden-brown and irresistible.
- Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for at least fifteen minutes before slicing. Garnish the top with fresh chopped parsley flakes, then slice into neat squares and serve while warm and gooey.
