Tips for success
For the best flavor, use high-quality meatballs from a butcher or make your own.
If you have time, browning the meatballs in a skillet before adding them to the slow cooker adds a deeper flavor, but it's not necessary. The slow cooker will do the work, but a quick sear can enhance the texture.
To make this dish even more convenient, you can assemble everything in the slow cooker insert the night before and refrigerate it.
In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on low as directed. This is a great make-ahead option for busy days, and the flavors will have even more time to develop.
Variations
- Spicy Arrabbiata Meatballs: Add 1/2 teaspoon more crushed red pepper and a pinch of dried oregano to the sauce for a spicier kick. Use spicy Italian sausage meatballs instead of the beef and pork blend for extra heat.
- Vegetarian Meatballs: Substitute the meatballs with plant-based meatballs and use a vegan Parmesan alternative. Cook for the same time, but check the package instructions for the ideal cook time for the alternative meatballs.
- Meatball Subs: After cooking, pile the meatballs and sauce into toasted hoagie rolls, top with extra mozzarella, and broil until the cheese is bubbly. Serve as a hearty sandwich for a game-day meal.
- Creamy Tomato Meatballs: Stir in 1/2 cup heavy cream or mascarpone during the last 15 minutes of cooking to create a richer, creamier sauce. This adds a luxurious texture and mellows the acidity of the tomatoes.
Storage and make-ahead

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The meatballs will keep well and the flavors will continue to meld.
Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until warmed through. The sauce may thicken upon refrigeration; add a splash of water or broth when reheating if needed.
You can assemble the entire dish (without the mozzarella and basil) up to 24 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate the slow cooker insert.
When ready to cook, place the insert in the slow cooker and cook on low for 3 hours, then add the mozzarella and basil as directed. This is perfect for meal prep or entertaining.
Serving ideas
Serve the meatballs hot from the slow cooker, spooned over cooked pasta, polenta, or crusty Italian bread. The sauce is perfect for sopping up, so provide plenty of bread. A side salad with a simple vinaigrette balances the richness of the dish.
For a low-carb option, serve the meatballs and sauce over zucchini noodles or cauliflower rice. The dish also works well as a hearty appetizer for parties, served with toothpicks and a bowl of extra sauce for dipping. Garnish with additional fresh basil and grated Parmesan just before serving.

Cheesy Marinara Crockpot Meatballs with Mozzarella Pearls

Ingredients
- 2 lb Italian beef and pork meatballs
- 3 cups San Marzano marinara sauce
- 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp crushed red pepper
- 8 oz fresh mozzarella pearls
- 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, torn
Instructions
- Place the Italian beef and pork meatballs in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer. Pour the San Marzano marinara sauce over the meatballs, ensuring they are mostly covered. Sprinkle the freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, minced garlic, and crushed red pepper over the sauce. Stir gently to combine, being careful not to break the meatballs apart.
- Cover the slow cooker with the lid and set it to LOW. Cook for 3 hours, or until the sauce is bubbling and the meatballs are cooked through. Avoid lifting the lid during cooking to retain heat and moisture. The sauce will thicken slightly and the flavors will meld together.
- After 3 hours, scatter the fresh mozzarella pearls over the top of the meatballs and sauce. Sprinkle the torn basil leaves over the cheese. Replace the lid and cook for an additional 10 minutes, or until the mozzarella is melted and creamy. Serve hot directly from the slow cooker with crusty garlic bread.
