Tips for success

For the best cheese pull, use freshly shredded mozzarella rather than pre-shredded, which often contains anti-caking agents that can affect melting.

Let the stuffed bread rest for 2-3 minutes after baking — this allows the cheese to set slightly so it stretches rather than runs out completely when sliced. Use a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion to cut clean diagonal slices without squishing the filling.

If you want extra crispness on the outside, brush the top of the baguette with a little melted garlic butter before baking. To make the dish spicier, add a pinch of cayenne to the glaze or drizzle extra hot sauce over the finished slices.

For a milder version, reduce the chili flakes and hot sauce, or use a mild hot sauce and add a touch more honey to balance the heat.

Variations

  • Spicy Pepperoncini: Add sliced pepperoncini or banana peppers along with the chicken for a tangy, spicy kick. The briny heat cuts through the richness of the cheese and honey.
  • Bacon Ranch: Stir cooked, crumbled bacon into the chicken mixture and drizzle with ranch dressing before adding the mozzarella. The smoky saltiness pairs perfectly with the sweet glaze.
  • Vegetarian Mushroom: Replace the chicken with sautéed mushrooms and onions. Cook them in butter with the same spices, then toss with the honey-garlic glaze for a hearty meatless version.
  • BBQ Chicken: Swap the hot sauce for barbecue sauce and use smoked paprika instead of regular. This gives a sweeter, smokier flavor that is perfect for a cookout-style dinner.

Storage and make-ahead

Fridge
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven until hot and cheese melts.
Freezer
Wrap the unbaked stuffed bread tightly in foil and freeze for up to 2 months. Bake from frozen at 400°F for 20-25 minutes.
Reheat
Reheat slices in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes, or in an air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes until crisp and hot.

Store leftover stuffed bread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place slices on a baking sheet and warm in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5-7 minutes until the cheese melts again. Avoid microwaving, as it will make the bread soggy.

The glazed chicken can be cooked and refrigerated up to 2 days ahead. Assemble the stuffed bread just before baking, or assemble fully and refrigerate for up to 24 hours — add a few extra minutes to the bake time if starting from cold.

Serving ideas

Serve the stuffed bread warm, straight from the oven, when the cheese is at its most stretchy. Slice into thick diagonal rounds and arrange on a platter so the cheese pulls are visible.

It works beautifully as a main course with a simple green salad, or as a hearty appetizer for a party — just set out plenty of napkins.

For a complete meal, pair it with a crisp coleslaw or roasted vegetables. The sweet-spicy chicken and rich cheese are balanced by something fresh and tangy.

You can also serve it with extra hot sauce or honey on the side for guests to customize the heat level. Leftovers are delicious cold or gently reheated, though the bread is best enjoyed the day it is made.

Frequently asked questions

Can this stuffed bread be made ahead of time?
Yes, the chicken can be cooked and glazed up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated. Assemble the bread just before baking, or assemble fully and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. If baking from cold, add 3-5 minutes to the bake time to ensure the cheese melts and the bread heats through.
Why does the bread become soggy?
Sogginess usually comes from too much sauce or overfilling. Make sure to hollow out the baguette well and avoid adding extra sauce beyond the recipe amount. Also, bake at high heat so the bread crisps quickly before the moisture from the filling can soak in.
Can this recipe be made gluten-free?
Yes, use a gluten-free baguette or crusty loaf, and ensure your hot sauce and garlic butter are gluten-free. Check all packaged ingredients for gluten-free certification. The rest of the ingredients are naturally gluten-free, so it is an easy swap.
What is the best way to reheat leftovers?
Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is crisp. An air fryer also works well at 350°F for 3-4 minutes. Avoid microwaving, as it makes the bread chewy and soggy.
Can this be made with chicken thighs instead of breasts?
Absolutely. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs will be even juicier and more flavorful. Dice them the same size and cook until they reach 165°F (74°C). The cooking time may be slightly longer, so check for doneness.

Cheesy Hot Honey Garlic Chicken Stuffed Bread

Prep 15 minCook 17 minTotal 32 minServes 6
Golden baguette stuffed with hot honey garlic chicken and melted mozzarella, sliced thick with cheese pull

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp clover honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 French baguette
  • 3 tbsp garlic butter, softened
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced chicken breast in a single layer. Sprinkle with garlic powder, paprika, chili flakes, salt, and black pepper. Cook without stirring for 2-3 minutes, then toss and continue cooking until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through, about 5-6 minutes total. The chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  2. Reduce the heat to low. Add the honey, minced garlic, hot sauce, and remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet with the cooked chicken. Stir constantly for 1-2 minutes until the butter melts and the sauce becomes glossy and coats every piece of chicken evenly.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the French baguette in half lengthwise. Use a spoon to hollow out some of the soft interior from both halves, leaving a sturdy shell about 1/2 inch thick. Spread the garlic butter evenly over the inside of both halves.
  4. Spoon the hot honey garlic chicken into the bottom half of the baguette, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella generously over the chicken, covering it completely. Place the top half of the baguette over the filling to close the sandwich.
  5. Place the stuffed baguette on a baking sheet. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted and bubbling, and the bread is golden and crisp on the outside. The cheese should be visibly molten when you peek inside.
  6. Remove the stuffed bread from the oven and let it cool for 2-3 minutes on the baking sheet. Use a serrated knife to slice the bread into thick diagonal rounds, about 2 inches wide. Pull the slices apart gently to show the cheese stretch. Serve warm.
