Tips for success
For the most flavorful sauce, use high-quality unfiltered apple cider—it has a deeper apple taste than filtered juice. If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove the chicken and apples once cooked, then simmer the sauce on the stovetop over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes until reduced by a quarter.
You can also whisk in a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water) and cook for 2 minutes.
This recipe is endlessly adaptable. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm spice note, or a sprig of fresh thyme for an herby contrast.
For a touch of heat, a pinch of cayenne or a splash of hot sauce works well. If you have leftover sauce, it's delicious spooned over roasted vegetables or stirred into rice.
Variations
- Spiced Apple Cider Chicken: Add 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg to the brown sugar before sprinkling over the apples. The warm spices deepen the autumn flavor and pair beautifully with the cider and cream.
- Sage Butter Chicken: Replace the salted butter with 4 tablespoons unsalted butter and add 8 fresh sage leaves along with the butter. The sage infuses the sauce with an earthy, savory note that complements the sweet apples.
- Cider-Braised Chicken Thighs: Swap the chicken breast cutlets for 4 bone-in, skinless chicken thighs. Increase the cooking time to 5-6 hours on LOW or 3-4 hours on HIGH. The thighs stay even more moist and flavorful.
- Creamy Apple Dijon Chicken: Stir 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard into the heavy cream before pouring it over the chicken. The mustard adds a tangy kick that cuts through the richness and brightens the sauce.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of cider or cream to restore the sauce's consistency.
- Freezer
- Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat
- Reheat in a covered skillet over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Add a splash of cider or cream if the sauce is too thick.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The sauce will thicken as it cools.
Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of cider or cream if needed to loosen the sauce. The chicken may dry out slightly on reheating, so spoon extra sauce over it.
You can assemble the entire dish in the slow cooker insert the night before. Cover and refrigerate overnight, then place the insert in the slow cooker and cook as directed the next day.
Add 30 minutes to the cooking time to account for the cold start. Alternatively, cook the dish fully, cool it, and refrigerate for up to 2 days before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve the chicken and apples over a generous scoop of whipped garlic mashed potatoes, letting the sauce pool around the edges. The creamy potatoes balance the sweet-tart sauce and soak up every bit of flavor. Add a simple green salad or steamed green beans on the side for a touch of freshness and color.
For a lighter option, serve the chicken and apples over rice, quinoa, or egg noodles. The sauce clings beautifully to all of these. A crusty baguette is also excellent for mopping up the remaining sauce. Garnish with fresh thyme or chopped parsley if desired, though the dish is delicious as is.

Butter Cream Apple Cider Chicken Cutlets: One-Pot Crockpot Dinner

Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast cutlets (about 1 1/2 lb)
- 2 Honeycrisp apples, sliced
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup unfiltered apple cider
- 4 tbsp salted butter, cut into pats
- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
- whipped garlic mashed potatoes, for serving
Instructions
- Place the chicken breast cutlets in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer. Scatter the sliced Honeycrisp apples over the chicken. Sprinkle the dark brown sugar evenly over the apples and chicken, then pour the unfiltered apple cider over the top.
- Dot the top of the apple-chicken mixture with the salted butter pats. Pour the heavy whipping cream evenly over everything. Do not stir; the layers will meld as the slow cooker works.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the chicken is cooked through and tender. The sauce will bubble gently and the apples will soften.
- Spoon the chicken and apples over warm whipped garlic mashed potatoes. Ladle the buttery cream sauce generously over each portion. Serve immediately.
