Tips for success
For the best flavor, choose a high-quality maple-bourbon barbecue sauce that you enjoy eating straight from the jar. If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dry rub.
You can also swap the smoked paprika for chipotle powder for a smoky heat. The onions are essential—don't skip them, as they melt into the sauce and add natural sweetness.
If you have time, sear the ribs in a hot skillet with a little oil before adding them to the slow cooker. This adds a deeper flavor and color, but it's not necessary.
For a thicker sauce, you can remove the ribs and simmer the sauce on the stovetop for 10 minutes to reduce. Serve the ribs with extra sauce and a sprinkle of fresh parsley if you like, though the video keeps it simple.
Variations
- Spicy Chipotle Ribs: Add 1-2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, minced, to the barbecue sauce along with a teaspoon of adobo sauce. This adds a smoky, spicy kick that balances the sweetness.
- Honey Garlic Ribs: Replace the maple-bourbon barbecue sauce with a mixture of 1/2 cup honey, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 4 cloves minced garlic, and 2 tablespoons ketchup. Cook as directed for a sweet-savory twist.
- Root Beer Ribs: Substitute 1 cup of root beer for 1/2 cup of the barbecue sauce and add 1/4 cup of brown sugar. The root beer adds a unique sweetness and depth of flavor.
- Smoky Bacon Ribs: Wrap each rib in a slice of bacon before placing in the slow cooker. The bacon adds extra smokiness and richness, and it cooks into the sauce during the long simmer.

Serving ideas
Serve these ribs hot, straight from the slow cooker. The tender meat and thick sauce are perfect over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. A side of coleslaw or cornbread balances the richness. For a complete meal, add a simple green salad or roasted vegetables. The sauce is also delicious spooned over the meat, so don't be shy.
For a casual gathering, pile the ribs on a platter and let everyone help themselves. Provide plenty of napkins—these ribs are messy in the best way. You can also shred the meat and serve it on slider buns with pickles for a fun twist. Whatever way you serve them, these ribs are sure to be a hit.

Brown Sugar Maple Bourbon Country Pork Ribs: Easy Slow Cooker Dinner

Ingredients
- 2 1/2 lb boneless country-style pork ribs
- 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 1 tbsp smoked paprika
- 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups maple-bourbon barbecue sauce
Instructions
- Place the country-style pork ribs in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer, overlapping slightly if needed. Sprinkle the brown sugar and smoked paprika evenly over the ribs, turning to coat as much of the meat as possible. Scatter the sliced onions on top, covering the ribs completely.
- Pour the maple-bourbon barbecue sauce over the ribs and onions, using a spatula to spread it evenly. Make sure the sauce reaches the bottom of the slow cooker and coats the ribs generously. Cover the slow cooker with the lid.
- Set the slow cooker to LOW and cook for 6 to 8 hours, until the ribs are fork-tender and easily pull apart. The sauce will bubble gently and the onions will caramelize. Resist the urge to lift the lid during the first 4 hours to keep the heat steady. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- After 6 hours, insert a fork into the thickest part of a rib. The meat should be very tender and nearly falling apart. If it's still tough, continue cooking for another hour or two. The internal temperature of the pork should reach at least 145°F (63°C) for safety, but for fall-apart texture, it will be much higher. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Turn off the slow cooker. Using tongs, transfer the ribs to a cutting board or serving platter. Let the meat rest for at least 3 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the meat moist and flavorful.
- Using a spoon, drizzle the remaining sauce from the slow cooker over the rested ribs. The sauce should be thick and glossy, with caramelized onion bits. Serve the ribs hot, with extra sauce on the side if you like.
