Tips for success
For the best flavor, use a good-quality maple bourbon BBQ sauce. If you can't find one, mix your favorite BBQ sauce with 1 tablespoon of bourbon and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup.
Taste the sauce before pouring it over the ribs—if it's too sweet, add a splash of apple cider vinegar to balance it.
If you have time, sear the ribs in a hot skillet for 2-3 minutes per side before adding them to the slow cooker. This adds a deeper, caramelized flavor. But it's not necessary—the slow cooker does the work.
To keep the ribs warm for serving, set the slow cooker to 'warm' after they're done, but remove them after 30 minutes to avoid overcooking.
Variations
- Spicy Chipotle Ribs: Add 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (minced) and 1 tablespoon of adobo sauce to the BBQ sauce before pouring over the ribs. Reduce the brown sugar to 1/3 cup to balance the heat. The chipotle adds a smoky, spicy kick that pairs well with the sweetness.
- Honey Garlic Ribs: Replace the maple bourbon BBQ sauce with 1 1/2 cups of your favorite BBQ sauce, 1/4 cup honey, and 4 cloves of minced garlic. Reduce the brown sugar to 1/4 cup. This variation is sweeter and more garlicky, with a sticky glaze that clings to the ribs.
- Root Beer Ribs: Use 2 cups of root beer instead of the BBQ sauce, and add 1 cup of ketchup, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce. Reduce the brown sugar to 1/4 cup. The root beer adds a unique sweetness and depth that's surprisingly delicious.
- Smoky Peach Ribs: Stir 1 cup of peach preserves into the maple bourbon BBQ sauce. Add 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika extra to the rub. The peach preserves add a fruity sweetness and a touch of acidity that brightens the rich pork.

Leftover ribs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Keep the sauce with the ribs to keep them moist. To reheat, place the ribs in a baking dish, cover with foil, and warm in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 15-20 minutes, or microwave individual portions.
The ribs can be fully cooked up to 2 days ahead. Let them cool completely, then refrigerate in the sauce. To serve, reheat gently in a covered dish in the oven or on the stovetop. You can also prep the rub and slice the onions a day ahead, storing them separately in the refrigerator.
Serving ideas
Serve the ribs with extra sauce spooned over the top and the caramelized onions. They pair beautifully with coleslaw, cornbread, or a simple green salad.
For a heartier meal, serve over mashed potatoes or with roasted vegetables. The sweet and smoky flavors are perfect with a cold beer or a glass of iced tea.
These ribs are messy in the best way, so provide plenty of napkins. For a crowd, cut the ribs into single-bone portions and serve as an appetizer.
You can also shred the leftover meat and use it in sandwiches, tacos, or on top of nachos the next day. The sauce is so good you'll want to use it on everything.

Brown Sugar Maple Bourbon Baby Back Ribs: 6-Ingredient Crockpot Dinner

Ingredients
- 4 lb pork baby back ribs
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 2 tbsp smoked paprika
- 2 medium yellow onions, sliced
- 2 cups maple bourbon BBQ sauce
Instructions
- Place the pork baby back ribs on a clean cutting board. If the racks are long, cut them in half so they fit comfortably in the slow cooker. Pat the ribs dry with paper towels. Sprinkle the dark brown sugar and smoked paprika evenly over both sides of the ribs, pressing the rub gently into the meat.
- Scatter the sliced yellow onions evenly over the bottom of the slow cooker insert. Place the seasoned ribs on top of the onions, meaty side up, overlapping slightly if needed.
- Pour the maple bourbon BBQ sauce generously over the ribs, using a spatula to spread it evenly. Make sure the top of the ribs is well coated, but do not stir.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 hours, or until the meat is fork-tender and easily pulls away from the bone. Avoid opening the lid during the first few hours to keep the heat steady. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Once the ribs are cooked, turn off the slow cooker. Using tongs, carefully transfer the ribs to a cutting board. Let them rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute.
- Slice the ribs between the bones and arrange on a serving platter. Spoon some of the caramelized onions and sauce from the slow cooker over the top before serving.
