Tips for success
For the smoothest texture, use a high-powered blender and blend on high for a full minute.
If the blender struggles, add a splash of almond milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it blends easily. The smoothie should be thick enough to eat with a spoon, not drink through a straw.
Grate the dark chocolate just before serving to prevent it from melting. You can also use a vegetable peeler to make larger curls for a more dramatic garnish. For a prettier swirl, drizzle a little almond butter over the top before adding the whipped cream.
Variations
- Peanut Butter Swirl: Swap the almond butter for creamy peanut butter and use peanut milk or regular milk. Top with chopped peanuts and a drizzle of peanut butter for a classic combination.
- Extra Green Boost: Add a handful of fresh spinach to the blender with the other ingredients. The spinach will not alter the color significantly, but it adds a fresh, earthy note. Blend until completely smooth.
- Tropical Twist: Replace the strawberries with frozen mango chunks and add a splash of coconut milk. Top with toasted coconut flakes and lime zest for a refreshing change.
- Chocolate Lover's: Add 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder to the blender. Increase the almond butter to 1/3 cup and top with extra chocolate shavings and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
Storage and make-ahead
- Fridge
- Leftover smoothie base can be refrigerated for up to 2 days. Stir in a little almond milk to loosen it before serving.
- Freezer
- Freeze the smoothie base in an airtight container for up to 1 month.
- Reheat
- This recipe is served cold and does not need reheating. If frozen, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight and stir well before serving.
Store any leftover smoothie base in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The texture will thicken as it chills; stir in a little almond milk to thin it out before serving. The toppings are best added fresh, so store them separately.
You can prepare the fruit and chocolate in advance: slice the bananas, hull the strawberries, and grate the chocolate.
Store them in separate containers in the refrigerator for up to a day. Measure the frozen ingredients and keep them in the freezer. When ready to serve, simply blend and assemble.
Serving ideas
Serve the smoothie bowls immediately after assembling, while the whipped cream is cold and the chocolate curls are crisp.
The contrast between the cold, creamy smoothie and the airy whipped cream is delightful. This recipe makes two generous servings, perfect for a shared breakfast or a satisfying solo meal.
For a more indulgent presentation, add a drizzle of almond butter over the whipped cream and a few extra fresh blueberries on top.
You can also sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt over the chocolate curls to enhance the flavors. Serve with a spoon and enjoy the beautiful layers.
