Tips for success
For the best flavor, choose a BBQ sauce that lists molasses as one of the first ingredients. If your sauce is on the sweeter side, balance it with a splash of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of cayenne for a little heat.
The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon; if it's too thin, the ribs will be less glazed and more soupy. Taste the sauce before using it and adjust seasonings if needed.
To make the dish even more flavorful, sear the ribs in a hot skillet with a little oil before adding them to the slow cooker. This adds a caramelized crust and deepens the overall flavor. While this step is optional, it's worth the extra 10 minutes for a richer, more complex dish. If you do sear, do it in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add 1-2 minced chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to the BBQ sauce before pouring over the ribs. The smoky heat complements the sweet apples and molasses. For extra heat, sprinkle with red pepper flakes before serving.
- Honey Mustard Twist: Replace half of the molasses garlic BBQ sauce with honey mustard. This creates a tangy, sweet glaze that pairs well with the apples. Reduce the apple cider to 3/4 cup to balance the extra moisture.
- Apple Onion Version: Thinly slice one medium yellow onion and layer it with the apples. The onion adds savory depth and becomes sweet as it cooks. Increase the cooking time by 30 minutes if using a larger slow cooker.
- Smoky Bourbon Glaze: Stir 2 tablespoons bourbon and 1 teaspoon smoked paprika into the BBQ sauce. The bourbon adds a warm, oaky note, while the paprika lends a subtle smokiness. Cook as directed; the alcohol will cook off.
Storage and make-ahead

Store leftover ribs and sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors will continue to meld, making the leftovers even more delicious.
To reheat, place the ribs and sauce in a saucepan over medium heat, adding a splash of apple cider or water if needed to loosen the sauce. Alternatively, microwave individual portions in 30-second intervals until heated through.
This recipe is ideal for meal prep. You can assemble the ingredients in the slow cooker insert the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the slow cooker base and cook as directed.
If starting from cold, add 30-60 minutes to the cooking time. The cooked ribs also freeze well for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Serving ideas
Serve the ribs directly from the slow cooker for a casual, family-style meal. Place the ribs on a platter and spoon the cooked apples and sauce over the top.
The dish pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, creamy polenta, or crusty bread to soak up the rich sauce. A simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette adds brightness and cuts through the sweetness.
For a more polished presentation, shred the pork and pile it onto toasted buns for sliders or sandwiches. Top with a little of the cooked apples and a drizzle of sauce. The meat also works well over rice or egg noodles, with the sauce acting as a flavorful gravy. However you serve it, the ribs are sure to be a hit.

Apple Cider Molasses Country Pork Ribs

Ingredients
- 3 lb boneless country-style pork ribs
- 3 Honeycrisp apples, sliced
- 1 cup unfiltered apple cider
- 1 cup molasses garlic BBQ sauce
Instructions
- Place the boneless country-style pork ribs in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker in a single layer. Arrange the sliced Honeycrisp apples evenly over the ribs. Pour the unfiltered apple cider around the edges of the slow cooker, being careful not to wash the apples off the meat.
- Drizzle the molasses garlic BBQ sauce over the apples and ribs in thick ribbons, covering as much surface as possible. Use a spoon to spread the sauce gently if needed, but avoid stirring, as that can break up the apples.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until the pork is fork-tender and easily pulls apart. The apples will soften and meld into the sauce. Avoid opening the lid during cooking to maintain even heat. Let it rest for 3 minutes before slicing.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the ribs rest in the sauce for at least 3 minutes before serving. Use a fork to lift the ribs out of the slow cooker, letting excess sauce drip off, and transfer them to a serving platter. Spoon some of the cooked apples and sauce over the top.
